Church: A place for worship and, let’s be honest, a bit of disdain for fellow congregants. For many, attending church is as routine as putting on shoes or catching the latest episode of a popular show. It serves as a space for community, spirituality, and, according to some moms in our Confessional, a place to harbor resentment towards numerous attendees.
From the self-righteous “Helens” to the science-ignoring “Samanthas,” there’s a personality type for nearly everyone in attendance. While churches can indeed be filled with kind and welcoming individuals, our focus here is different. So grab your favorite hymnal and prepare for some confessions.
“I haven’t stepped foot in church since last February. My husband and kids probably think I’m doomed, but I just can’t handle the hypocrisy anymore.”

“I used to be a leader at my church, but their blatant disregard for health protocols during the pandemic has pushed me away. Even if the conspiracy theories were valid, I can’t support a group that neglects the welfare of our neighbors.”

“I got booted from my church small group for expressing my discomfort with in-person meetings during a surge in cases.”

Churches have unfortunately become hotbeds for misinformation about the pandemic. “Superspreader events” are a reality, and many aren’t even enforcing mask-wearing indoors. It’s no surprise that so many are frustrated with those who claim to be Christians yet fail to protect their communities.
“My mom’s newfound political views are making me cringe. She openly supports Trump now, which makes me want to disappear from embarrassment.”

“For years, I volunteered and taught kids at church. Not once did anyone thank me or check in during COVID. I thought I’d make friends through involvement, but I was mistaken.”

Church can be a very extroverted environment, which may not suit everyone, even those who appreciate the idea of church. The pressure from outgoing churchgoers to participate in every bake sale or prayer chain can be overwhelming.
“I used to be exceptionally religious, going to church weekly and having strong faith. Now, I identify as agnostic, and Easter is just a day for candy and egg hunts.”

“My husband regularly attends church, but struggles to connect with our neighbors. I’d rather spend time with those who aren’t religious and share positive experiences.”
Confessional #25775682
“I don’t miss church at all. I’m frustrated that leaders are figuring out Zoom. Can’t we just take a break?”
Confessional #25775408
“The women in my church all hang out together but never invite me. Yet, I’m good enough to babysit when they’re in a bind. I’m tired of being taken advantage of.”

The pandemic has prompted many moms to recognize that even if they appreciate the concept of church, actually attending isn’t always enjoyable or suitable for them. Whether it’s taking a break from services or completely distancing themselves from church communities, a lot of moms are reevaluating their involvement.
“Forget you, Catholic church. You’ve sucked the joy out of our marriage.”

“I grew up in church but can’t stand most ‘Christians’ anymore. I’m certain Jesus would be horrified by the behavior of many who claim to follow Him.”

“A wealthy friend and her husband are fundraising for a church mission trip to a tropical destination. I want to yell at them to fund their own vacation instead of asking others for money!”

“My husband and son are at church, while I’m enjoying the Real Housewives reunion.”
