PBS Kids has announced the cancellation of “Caillou,” leaving parents with mixed emotions. While many are celebrating the end of this often-controversial show, others are feeling strangely nostalgic about its departure.
The network took to social media to share the news, stating, “We’re saying goodbye to Caillou, but remember, when we say farewell to something, it just means we get to welcome something new!” They even included tips for parents to help their children adjust to the change (although in today’s digital age, keeping Caillou on repeat shouldn’t be too difficult for those who still want to indulge their kids).
Many parents who have had their fill of Caillou were quick to express their relief. Some described the character as “obnoxious,” while others labeled him a bad influence due to his less-than-stellar behavior. However, it seems there’s an equally vocal group mourning the little boy’s exit.
In an article for the Kansas City Star, author Emily Thompson outlined why parents have often taken issue with Caillou. “Four early episodes of ‘Caillou’ have been permanently banned from PBS Kids because the kid is such a demon seed: lying to his mother, tormenting the family cat, swatting his baby sister with a book. Even in later episodes, where his behavior was toned down after parental backlash, he still comes across as thoughtless, selfish, and impulsive.”
Despite the mixed feelings, many parents develop a sentimental attachment to the shows their kids watch during those early years. In my home, it was The Backyardigans, Bluey, and other favorites that filled the airwaves. Even though I sometimes found myself weary of the endless kids’ programming, I grew to appreciate these shows over time. Now, even the tunes from those shows can evoke some fond memories.
As we say goodbye to Caillou, we do so with both gratitude and frustration, knowing we can always rely on DVR and streaming to revisit moments from the past.
