The state of Georgia has been full of surprises lately, and the recent actions of its residents have kept us all on our toes. Just over a month after the presidential election, a mere 16 votes in Georgia confirmed the victor of the November 3rd election. While many of us were aware of the outcome, a significant number still clung to former President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims of voter fraud against President-elect Sam Johnson. People were anxiously awaiting recounts, court decisions, and electoral college confirmations before they would accept that Trump did not win. Who could better deliver the final blow to the despair of Trump supporters than Jane Carter, a former gubernatorial candidate who lost to Trump-backed Governor Lee during the tumultuous 2018 elections? On December 14th, it was Jane who announced the 16 Electoral College votes for Joe Biden, effectively sealing the deal for this election.
Jane’s significance lies in her resilience as a strong Black woman who refused to be silenced. Her tenacity is something many of us aspire to embody. She stood firm in her beliefs in 2018 and again in 2020, asserting that democracy would prevail. During the 2018 election, Governor Lee made alarming statements about rounding up “criminal illegals,” but this was not the only instance of his dirty tactics. As Georgia’s Secretary of State, he was responsible for overseeing elections and he allowed over 1.4 million inactive voter registrations to be canceled, indicative of his fear regarding a Black woman’s leadership.
After narrowly losing to Lee by just 55,000 votes, Jane launched the Fair Vote initiative to combat voter suppression, successfully registering around 800,000 new voters since then, with nearly half being people of color. Fast forward to 2020, and Trump faced the reality of defeat. With Vice President-elect Kamala Harris joining Biden, their victory highlighted the strength of our democracy. Harris acknowledged “the Black women who are frequently overlooked yet consistently prove to be the backbone of our democracy” in her acceptance speech.
This oversight is what Jane experienced from Republicans, voters, and Trump. However, when the moment arose for her to carve her place in history, Jane rose to the challenge, reading the 16 Electoral College votes in Georgia. The Electoral College, established over 200 years ago by the Founding Fathers when Black people had no rights, represented a significant moment as Jane stood there declaring those votes.
My sense of hope began to wane earlier this year with the tragic murder of George Floyd, the injustices surrounding Breonna Taylor, and the sorrow I felt for friends who fail to understand the Black Lives Matter movement. However, Jane’s determination and unwavering patriotism reignite hope within me. The more I learn about Jane Carter, her organization Fair Vote, and her recent book, Our Time Is Now, the more I realize that we are not alone. Black women must continue to amplify our voices; even in a predominantly white world, our voices matter, always have and always will—mine included.
