No Christmas Tradition Is Worth Spreading COVID-19—Here’s What We’re Doing Instead

With the ongoing pandemic, many of us are rethinking our usual holiday gatherings. I have to admit, it’s tough to accept that I won’t be baking cookies with my relatives or sharing quirky gifts with my favorite cousin. My kids are particularly upset that the annual cousin party at the hotel they’ve known their whole lives is off the table. Still, the reality is clear: no Christmas tradition is worth risking our health or that of our loved ones through COVID-19.

This year, Christmas will undoubtedly look different, but we’re committed to making our stay-at-home celebration joyful and memorable. Here are some creative ideas to ensure a festive atmosphere while keeping safe.

  1. Bake Special Holiday Cookies.
Introduce your children to cherished family recipes or experiment with new ones. A few years back, we made delightful peanut butter reindeer cookies adorned with chocolate-covered pretzels for antlers and colorful candies for eyes and noses. They were a hit! We also love making snowball and mint-chip cookies, both of which freeze well for later enjoyment.
  2. Declutter and Donate.
This time of year, many organizations need donations. Involve your child in sorting through their belongings to find toys, books, and games they no longer use. Not only does this create space for new items, but it also helps those in need. Don’t forget to purge any holiday decorations you no longer love or use.
  3. Relive Childhood Christmas Movies.
My kids adore “Home Alone,” just like I did growing up. We quote the film together! We also enjoy newer releases like “Jingle Jangle” on Netflix and “Christmas Chronicles 2.” Cozy movie nights are perfect for this year.
  4. Engage in Charity Work.
Staying home doesn’t mean we can’t give back. Many charitable organizations still need help, from toy donations to cash contributions. Involve your whole family in a charity project; for instance, kids can donate part of their allowance.
  5. Plan Virtual Gift Openings.
While it’s not the same as being together, video calls can be enjoyable! Ship gifts ahead of time and schedule video sessions to open them. To keep it organized, set ground rules for the kids, like remembering to say “thank you.” For adults, decide the order of gift-opening in advance.
  6. Capture and Share Moments.
Even if you’re staying home, take festive photos! Friends and family will appreciate seeing your holiday spirit on social media. Don’t forget to arrange a virtual visit with Santa for the kids, making for some great photo ops.
  7. Play Festive Music.
Music can enhance the holiday spirit. There are fantastic new Christmas albums to explore this year. From Dolly Parton to Meghan Trainor, there’s something for everyone. Classic artists like Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald are always a joy, too.
  8. Revive Family Game Nights.
Whether you’ve never done game nights or just haven’t had time, now’s your chance! Gather favorite snacks and play games everyone can enjoy, such as Uno or charades. If you have a beloved childhood game, teach it to your family. Bingo is always a crowd-pleaser!
  9. Write Letters to Santa.
My kids love crafting letters to Santa on Christmas Eve, complete with milk and cookies. Gather some stationery and let them express their wishes. Alternatively, you can send a letter through USPS to receive a response—just mail it before December 7th!
  10. Don’t Forget Self-Care.
It’s easy to focus solely on the kids during the holidays, but don’t forget about yourself. Treat yourself and your partner with special gifts or cozy pajamas. Consider giving each other some much-needed alone time to recharge.

While this holiday season will be unlike any other, I’m hopeful that with creativity and a positive attitude, we can create a merry and memorable stay-at-home Christmas.
