Reminder: Birthday Celebrations Can Be Simple Yet Amazing

In early November, our family celebrated a milestone: the final birthday in our household for 2020. Just like the previous four low-key COVID-era occasions, my son’s 8th birthday was filled with his favorite foods, FaceTiming with relatives, unwrapping a few gifts, and genuinely playing with those new toys.

This year marked the first time we didn’t host an official birthday party. No extravagant themes to orchestrate (like a Unicorn Ninja Bash!), no goody bags filled with trinkets no one really needs, and no weighing the option of an expensive venue against the chaos of hosting a sugar-fueled group of kids at home. And you know what? It was truly delightful.

I’m not saying past celebrations were all bad; my kids had a blast, and we created many joyful memories. However, things had gotten a bit out of hand. First, there was the pressure to invite the entire class. Then came the expectation of not just providing cake, but enough food to feed an army. Plus, whether or not the invite said “no gifts,” guests often felt obligated to bring something. In essence, our parties illustrated the saying, “Too much of a good thing can be overwhelming.”

As my children grow and prioritize spending time with their friends over family, I see the value in celebrating with peers. However, the pandemic has allowed us to rethink how we celebrate, especially regarding extravagant birthday bashes. A meaningful party doesn’t require grandeur; in fact, the simplest gatherings are often the most memorable. Just gathering a child with their closest friends, some sweet treats, and a few balloons can create a blast.

One added benefit of simplifying birthday parties is that it allows families to reclaim their weekends. I certainly don’t miss the frantic juggling of multiple birthday parties on Saturdays, which often ended in tears from my kids—and sometimes from me too.

We’ve experienced some spectacular parties that likely cost a fortune; while the lavish cakes were fun to admire, we’ve also enjoyed the intimate, low-key celebrations just as much. It takes very little to craft joyful memories for our kids, and ultimately, that’s the most important goal.
