In just 8 minutes and 46 seconds, everything changed for me. My name is Amara Jade Parker, and I identify as a biracial woman. As I witnessed the tragic scene of a man pleading for his life, a small voice drew me back to reality.
“Mama, what’s wrong?” my three-year-old asked, noticing my tears. “Mama, why are you crying?”
I struggled to find the right words in that moment. I embraced him tightly, inhaling the scent of his hair, and I lied.
“Mama’s okay,” I reassured him. “Everything’s fine, sweetheart.”
Yet, as I held him close, I was flooded with thoughts about what I wanted to share with him. I lacked the words to explain the harsh realities we face in a world where individuals meant to protect us can cause harm based on our differences. I couldn’t find the courage to discuss the deep-rooted injustices that have existed for centuries and how they could impact his future.
So, as a determined mother bear, I resolved to create that hope myself. I immersed myself in crafting inclusive, anti-racist art resources designed for children like him and beyond.
My days, evenings, and weekends became a whirlwind of organizing marches, reading activism-themed books to kids in parks, and advocating for change on global news platforms. I launched The Change Makers Initiative, offering caregivers, students, and educators access to community-driven, diversity-focused art. Titles like “D is for Diversity,” “A is for Ally,” and “In Our Class” now adorn classrooms throughout the United States, filling me with immense pride.
I became the embodiment of the hope I wanted to see in the world, creating the change I envision for my children’s future. After nearly 200 days of waking up with the mission to transform our world, I’ve learned one critical lesson: everyone has a voice.
Previously, I often felt disconnected from the narrative surrounding Black liberation. As a woman of color with a white partner and lighter-skinned children, I benefit from certain privileges. I know my family is generally safe, a luxury not afforded to many in the Black community. Our skin, a beautiful shade of cinnamon, can also be a weapon of discrimination.
While my experiences may differ from others within the Black community, it doesn’t diminish my worth in this movement. My voice is valuable, and it needs to be heard.
If you are a mother, your voice is needed.
If you are an artist, your voice is essential.
If you are a chef, manager, grocery store clerk, accountant, or even an astronaut, we NEED you.
Each of us possesses unique gifts and purposes. For me, it’s art; for you, it might be something entirely different. This diversity is the very essence of our world’s beauty.
The community I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of over these past 200 days has enriched my life in ways I never imagined. I could not have made such significant strides without the support of individuals from all walks of life. Just look at how far we’ve come.
To those still seeking their place in the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight for human rights: use your voice. Use it to educate the next generation. Use it to amplify our message. Use it to challenge hate and inspire constructive dialogue. Use it to support Black-owned businesses, advocate for Black leadership, and protect Black lives in your community.
