A woman has filed a lawsuit against a former police officer linked to Breonna Taylor’s death, alleging sexual assault and claiming a pattern of predatory behavior. Brett Hankison, who was dismissed from the Louisville police department following his role in Taylor’s fatal shooting, is now facing serious allegations months after a woman accused him of rape.
The Allegations
Margo Fields, the plaintiff, shared her experience on social media, recounting an incident from 2018 when she was 22 and Hankison, then 42, offered her a ride home from a bar where he was providing security. Trusting him because of his position, she accepted his offer. Fields alleges that after dropping her off, Hankison entered her home uninvited and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious in her bedroom. The lawsuit states, “He stripped off his clothes and willfully, intentionally, painfully and violently sexually assaulted Margo.” She reported awakening to find him on top of her and shouted for him to leave, resulting in him fleeing the scene. The traumatic event left her both physically and emotionally scarred.
Fear of Reporting
Like many victims, Fields initially hesitated to report the incident, fearing disbelief and retaliation due to Hankison’s status as a law enforcement officer. “I never reported him out of fear of retaliation,” she stated in her Facebook post. “Who do you call when the person who assaulted you is a police officer?”
Additional Allegations
Fields is not alone in her allegations against Hankison. Another woman, Emily Johnson, also recounted a troubling encounter with him, stating he made unwelcome advances while driving her home. After her friend reported the incident, no action was taken.
Fields’s lawsuit cites additional accounts of misconduct from eight other women, primarily involving similar situations where Hankison offered to drive them home from the same bar. Despite a history of allegations against him, Hankison had not faced disciplinary action from the Louisville Metro Police Department. The lawsuit also mentions that he was previously investigated for soliciting sexual favors in exchange for avoiding criminal charges against another woman.
Current Status
Hankison is currently free on bail and awaiting trial for charges related to the Taylor case, specifically for “wanton endangerment in the first degree.” Notably, none of the officers involved in the shooting of Breonna Taylor have faced charges in connection to her death.
