A Heartfelt Tribute to the Incredible Educators Making Virtual Learning a Reality

This is my teacher, and she’s one of 67 who inspire me daily.

While you see a dedicated educator engaging with students through a screen, what you might not realize is that she’s operating three computers, an extra keyboard, and a document camera—think of it as a high-tech version of an overhead projector for those who haven’t been in a classroom in a while.

Today, I’m observing a 45-minute lesson in her empty classroom. She tirelessly encourages her students to keep their cameras on and mute themselves so everyone can hear. She gently reminds parents not to answer for their kids, posing thoughtful questions that connect her with each and every student.

Even when her name is mispronounced, she greets the mistake with a warm smile and enthusiasm. You can genuinely feel her affection in her voice and witness her remarkable patience as she navigates lessons on similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia. Her teaching material is spot-on, delivered without a hitch. She is successfully driving the lesson forward and meeting my high expectations—no easy feat if you know me.

Surrounded by at least ten resource books, she’s been at school for over an hour, yet her lunch and purse remain untouched on a nearby counter.

Every single student is engaged. Every. One.

She wasn’t trained for this. There’s no degree in “pandemic teaching.” There’s no preparatory course, and certainly no time to get ready.

She doesn’t receive “overtime” pay and is reminded daily—mostly by me—that “other duties as assigned” now characterize her workdays. She’s taught face-to-face classes whenever substitutes aren’t available, all while continuing to support her virtual students throughout the day. How does she manage it? I honestly have no clue, but she and her team consistently make it work.

For six weeks now, she’s been doing this, and in three more, students will choose between virtual or in-person learning again, prompting her to reset her routines as if it were a brand new school year.

So, if you ever doubt the dedication of teachers, remember this post. They are not just ticking boxes; they show up for themselves, their colleagues, and their students. They carry an enormous burden that many will never truly understand.

If you know a teacher, make it a point to uplift them every single day—they need it.

And to my amazing educators—I couldn’t be prouder of each of you! You make my heart sing, and I see you.
