Navigating the complexities of infertility can be overwhelming. Whether you’re trying to conceive, expectant, or managing the chaos of parenting, connecting with friends is crucial for maintaining your sanity. Yet, there are times when you just don’t have the energy to share the details of your latest appointment with the fertility specialist. Or perhaps you’re juggling a toddler and can’t find the time to craft a lengthy text. This is where the EmojiMom app steps in.

Founded by close friends Emily Carter, Lisa Mitchell, and Jessica Reed, EmojiMom emerged from their shared experiences as new moms in 2016. These women provided each other with support during their parenting journey and brainstormed emoji concepts during those late-night feedings. “We were constantly texting each other during those sleepless nights,” says Lisa. “We often joked about needing an emoji for ‘exhausted mom’ or even ‘spilled breast milk.’ Eventually, Emily proposed, ‘We should really create this… there has to be a mom emoji!’”

The EmojiMom app officially launched in July 2016, starting with 250 emojis and now boasting over 400 unique symbols. According to Lisa, the toddler tantrum emojis have received particularly enthusiastic responses. “We have multiple versions—it’s a hit!” she laughs.

Beyond representing the breastfeeding experience and the ups and downs of #momlife, the app creators have made a concerted effort to embrace diverse parenting experiences. They offer emojis for pregnancy, adoption, and even depict fathers in parenting roles. Future plans include expanding to emojis for older children, as well as for pregnancy loss and rainbow babies. “We aim to create emojis that resonate with all parenting stages,” explains Lisa.

The trio draws inspiration from their individual parenting journeys, mom forums, and valuable feedback from users. Their emojis have gained international popularity, reaching users in countries like Brazil, France, and Germany. “Our emojis capture universal experiences without words,” Lisa notes. “It’s something we’ve kept at the forefront as we develop new ideas.”

Among their extensive collection, the infertility emojis stand out. “We weren’t sure if we could capture such deeply emotional experiences with just an emoji, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much people appreciate them in situations where words can fail,” she shared with Modern Family Blog.

As someone who has faced infertility challenges, I can say that these emojis would have been a comforting tool during my own journey. The keyboard includes emojis representing various infertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). There’s even an emoji for “shot in the butt” and “pee on a stick.”

Infertility can be an emotionally taxing experience, leaving you at a loss for words even when your friends are eager to support you. EmojiMom’s simple but impactful “I’m sorry” emoji can effectively convey your feelings when words escape you.

Whether you’re dealing with the ups and downs of parenting, pregnancy, or the journey to conceive, sometimes an emoji can express what you can’t.
