You left that Friday, excited about a much-needed break from your busy routines. Yet, instead of a respite, you watched as your familiar world vanished—like the classic illusion of pulling a tablecloth from under plates without disturbing them. Your family, home, and that red-cased iPad from school remained, yet a vital part of your life seemed to disappear.
Graduation will not come in the same way as it has for those who came before you. No dress, no suit, no cap, no handshake. You missed out on the chance to acclimate to your new high school environment, to enjoy spring sports, to celebrate with friends, or to experience the thrilling end of your sometimes monotonous but cherished 8th-grade year. The uncertainty of our future looms large, leaving many questions unanswered.
Had I known on that day in March that it would be our last face-to-face interaction, I would have told you this: despite the hardships you face, your insights, creativity, and humor signal a resilience that will be essential to the healing our world so desperately needs. You will adapt and grow, paving a new path for future generations.
I believe in your strength and intellect. I would have kept the handouts you didn’t need and reminded you to embrace your childhood one last time. If only I had known…
