In a progressive move, a library in Oregon is bridging the generational gap by offering a course dedicated to teaching essential adulting skills. With the demands of modern life, many young adults find themselves lacking basic knowledge that was once passed down through generations. Tasks such as unclogging a sink, changing a tire, cooking a simple meal, doing taxes, balancing a checkbook, or even knowing when to retire those skinny jeans can feel daunting for some.
The North Bend Public Library has introduced a six-part series called “Adulting 101: Essential Skills for Ages 16–25,” aimed at equipping young adults with fundamental life skills. Teresa Jensen, the assistant director of library services, collaborated with her colleague, Mark Rivers, to develop this initiative after seeing similar programs at other libraries.
The first workshop kicked off in February, centered around “Bare Essential Cooking.” Led by Mark, this session started with basic cooking tips and progressed to practical lessons on preparing simple dishes like quesadillas and grilled cheese sandwiches using nothing but aluminum foil and an iron. Who knew that an iron could double as a cooking device? I’m tempted to start live streaming these lessons myself!
Subsequent sessions have covered vital topics in personal finance, featuring guest speakers who shared insights on budgeting, managing checking accounts (are those still a thing?), building credit, and navigating tax filings. As someone who used to work in finance, I can assure you that these courses will also attract older participants who missed out on such essential lessons in their youth.
Future workshops will delve into critical subjects like identifying fake news, preparing for job interviews, and assessing when it might be time to leave the nest (likely for those who believe they can live with their parents indefinitely). There’s even a quirky session titled “Odds and Ends” to address miscellaneous adulting inquiries.
Importantly, these workshops are offered free of charge and are primarily designed for young adults, but there are no age restrictions on attendance. The library also provides introductory courses on using computers, smartphones, and tablets, catering to those who may struggle with technology—hi, Dad!
To top it off, the North Bend Public Library features an “Inside the Lines Adult Coloring Club,” proving that there’s something for everyone at the library. In summary, the North Bend Public Library is taking a proactive approach to empower young adults with essential life skills through their innovative “Adulting 101” courses, addressing a significant gap in practical knowledge that many face today.
