More Americans Chose Libraries Over Movies Last Year

As digital media continues to expand, one might expect libraries to become relics of the past. However, recent data reveals a delightful contradiction: more Americans frequented libraries than engaged in any other cultural activities last year, including trips to the movies. According to a Gallup poll, library visits in 2019 surpassed outings to cinemas, sporting events, live music, and even national parks.

On average, Americans visited libraries 10.5 times per year, compared to just 5.3 movie outings. One can’t help but think that financial considerations play a role here—after all, a family trip to the movies, complete with 3D tickets and snacks, can easily exceed $100. In contrast, library access remains completely free.

Library visits outshined other cultural activities significantly. Americans averaged fewer than five trips to sporting events and 3.8 visits to concerts or theater performances throughout the same year. “Despite the rise of digital entertainment options—including e-books, podcasts, and streaming services—libraries have remained a popular destination for many Americans,” states the Gallup report. The appeal of libraries may stem from their offerings, such as complimentary Wi-Fi, movie rentals, and children’s programs, which attract young adults, women, and those from lower-income backgrounds.

Interestingly, women visited libraries an impressive 13.4 times a year, while men averaged just 7.5 visits. The frequency of library visits tended to decrease with higher household income. However, trips remained consistent across households, regardless of whether they had children. Gallup suggests this consistency may be due to young adults visiting libraries during college and later returning as parents.

Geographically, the Midwest leads in library visits, with an average of 12.9 times annually, whereas the South trails slightly at 9.3 visits. The last comparable Gallup survey was conducted in 2001, and it noted a slight increase in library use over nearly two decades. However, while this report indicates that library visits outnumber other cultural activities, it does not specify how many Americans actually utilize libraries. According to a 2016 Pew Research study, only 48% of Americans reported visiting a library that year.

In conclusion, the enduring relevance of libraries is reassuring in our increasingly digital world. Books are far from obsolete, and it’s refreshing to witness their continued popularity.
