As I inch closer to 40, I find myself repeating a mantra in my head: “I’m nearly 40 — I don’t have the time or energy for this nonsense.”
The countdown to my milestone birthday in June has felt like an impending storm, and yes, I’ve got a countdown app ticking away the days left in my thirties. It’s been a decade filled with significant life events: becoming a mother, navigating my role as a wife, climbing the career ladder, and managing the rollercoaster of anxiety. There were beach vacations, bonding moments with friends, kids’ sports, workouts, and concerts. It’s been a whirlwind, to say the least.
In my younger years, turning 40 seemed like crossing into an entirely different universe. I remember thinking that anyone in their 40s was ancient. Well, here I am, and it’s happening whether I like it or not. But lately, I’ve come to realize that hitting the big 4-0 might not be such a bad thing after all. I’m in the best shape I’ve been in since my college days, rocking that 90-minute spin class like it’s a walk in the park. My fitness studio is filled with fabulous women my age who inspire me every day. Plus, my kids are growing up, allowing me to enjoy Saturday mornings with a little extra sleep while they prepare their own breakfasts.
I’m nearly 40 — I don’t have time for trivial dramas. My focus is now on nurturing meaningful relationships; I expect reciprocity when I ask how someone is doing. I won’t tolerate any bullying directed at my kids; I will always advocate for them with confidence.
Out with the negativity! If I don’t feel like attending an event, I’m saying NO. If I want dessert, you bet I’m indulging in that cake and ice cream. And if I feel like binge-watching a true crime series on my couch, don’t bother me — I refuse to feel guilty. Who knows? Maybe I’ll finally take up knitting or crocheting; after all, isn’t that what older folks do? LOL. I might even write that children’s book I’ve had swirling in my head. The possibilities are endless.
Will I still blast hip-hop and rap in my car? Absolutely. Am I still shopping at Urban Outfitters? You know it. Just because I’m nearing 40 doesn’t mean I have to trade my style for frumpy clothes and soft rock. The Kardashians will remain my guilty pleasure, and my oversized hoop earrings aren’t going anywhere.
I’m committed to getting stronger, maintaining a healthy(ish) lifestyle, and embracing this new chapter of my life, all while Jay-Z and Kanye play in the background. There’s so much to look forward to!
