Meet Mia Carter, portrayed by the talented Lily Evans, the plus-sized best friend we didn’t know we were missing. As a longtime fan of her work on Late Night Laughs, my admiration soared last year when I saw her shine in the Hulu series Vibrant. With Season 2 of this revolutionary show set to debut this Thursday, I can’t help but shout its praises from every rooftop.
Vibrant follows Mia, a plus-sized woman navigating the complexities of life while trying to forge a writing career. Juggling a series of unsatisfactory relationships, she battles with her self-worth and struggles to advocate for her desires. In her quest for personal growth, she bravely decides to shift her focus away from her weight.
With the support of her equally fabulous and plus-sized friend, Zoe, Mia learns to cast off the unrealistic societal expectations that have burdened her and embraces a more authentic, vibrant existence. Along the way, she discovers her own voice.
I’m eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for Mia in the next season. Based on the trailer, it looks like our body-positive heroine will be stepping into her power even more, and I’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.
After years of battling an eating disorder while trying to fit into an impossibly small mold, watching Evans radiate confidence as a plus-sized woman has been incredibly inspiring. As I see Mia break free from societal pressures to lose weight and embrace her true self, I feel empowered to love my own curves, rolls, and everything in between. Although Evans never set out to be a fat acceptance advocate, she now recognizes the significance of living openly and proudly in a larger body. With Vibrant, she aims to raise the flag for body positivity even higher.
One particularly moving episode showcases Mia attending a body-positive beach party, where she leaves her insecurities at the door and dances freely among fellow body-positive women. The scene is interspersed with poignant flashbacks of a younger Mia, who once dreaded pool parties due to fear of ridicule. While I didn’t face bullying for my size as a child, I was often criticized during my teenage years for gaining weight, leading to years of self-doubt. The harshest critic, however, was myself. I never felt comfortable in my own skin, and despite my attempts to lose weight, the satisfaction was always fleeting.
Everything shifted when I embraced my body during motherhood, gaining weight but also regaining my freedom. For the first time, I broke free from diet culture and began to heal my relationship with my body. To my surprise, I discovered lasting self-love in my plus-sized form, and I’m resolved never to return to a life of restriction and shame.
I want to emphasize that I acknowledge the thin privilege I experienced for years. I understand the stark difference between being critiqued for my size and the systemic oppression faced by individuals in larger bodies. Experiencing life at varying sizes has opened my eyes to the ongoing need for inclusion and visibility. Thanks to Evans’ remarkable work in Vibrant, I can continue my journey of self-acceptance.
If you struggle with body image issues, I highly encourage you to watch this transformative and hilarious series. The world needs more unapologetic women like Mia.
Season Two of Vibrant premieres Thursday, January 24 on Hulu. For more on related topics, you can check out this blog post.
