Participation is voluntary for each state department or agency; however, the initiative was recently approved by Governor Mark Thompson, with 20 departments already on board. To participate, employees must secure authorization from their HR departments and create an “individualized plan” for their infants. As long as there are no safety concerns and the babies cause minimal disruptions, they are welcome to join their parents at work.
“This initiative aims to support working families, providing them with a chance to give their children a nurturing start while maintaining their careers,” Thompson remarked at a press conference, expressing hope that this new policy will attract younger generations to state employment.
Employers that sign up for the initiative are required to provide at least one diaper changing station and allow nursing mothers flexible schedules for breastfeeding. Emma Carter, an employee in the Parks and Recreation Division, shared her relief about the program, stating, “I’ve always worried about sending my daughter to daycare at such a young age. This new policy is a game changer for families like mine.”
New Hampshire isn’t alone; Arizona, Kansas, Nevada, and Washington have already adopted similar “Infant at Work” programs. For instance, Arizona’s initiative, launched in 2016, has seen great success, with nearly 200 babies welcomed into the workplace. The Department of Health Services noted the positive impact on employee morale, adding that both staff and infants enjoy the presence of little ones in the office.
While initiatives like this undoubtedly make life easier for working parents and alleviate some of the daycare financial burden, there’s also a strong case for advocating for paid family leave and subsidized daycare options. These measures could further support parents without the need to balance work and childcare simultaneously.
