As October arrives, ushering in the crispness of fall, the excitement of Halloween, and the familiar taste of pumpkin spice lattes, it also marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a time when the world turns pink, offering countless opportunities to show our support for those affected by this disease. It’s a month for celebrating survivors, uplifting those still in the fight, and reflecting on the memories of those we’ve lost.
While I was always mindful of breast cancer and its impact on many lives, it wasn’t until I met Clara that I truly understood its significance. Clara’s journey was one of inspiration amidst the storm of diagnoses, surgeries, remissions, and, unfortunately, heart-wrenching goodbyes. But my focus here is on Clara and the light she continues to shine in my life.
Clara had a spirit akin to a beloved fairy tale character. Her enchanting voice and kind-hearted nature touched everyone she encountered. She led a weekly music class for new mothers, creating a sanctuary for exhausted parents and their little ones. My son would beam with joy every time he saw her, a stark contrast to his earlier mischief. For me, those classes were a much-needed respite from the challenges of maternity leave; a chance to laugh, share, and even shed tears while singing soft melodies like “You Are My Sunshine.”
Soon after tying the knot, Clara’s dreams blossomed as she discovered she was expecting. However, her joy was swiftly overshadowed when she discovered a lump in her breast just weeks later. At eight weeks pregnant, she received the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. Yet she faced the challenge like a true champion, enduring chemotherapy while navigating the trials of morning sickness. Her maternity photoshoot, despite the circumstances, was for the American Cancer Society—a testament to her strength and determination. Ultimately, she welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world, embodying resilience and love.
Clara’s fight took her into remission, but the battle was far from over. When I heard the news of her passing, it felt unreal. This was not how her story was meant to end; she had a son who deserved to grow up with her by his side.
On those days when I struggle, like a dreary Sunday attempting to manage a spirited little one while recovering from a night of indulgence, Clara’s spirit ignites a fire within me. I think of how she would have cherished every moment with her son, dancing and singing him to joy. In these reflections, I find a deep sense of gratitude for my own life. I get to embrace motherhood, to love and nurture this amazing little human. Although I don’t magically transform into a flawless mom, I strive to honor Clara and all mothers who would give anything for more time with their children. I hold my son a little tighter for them.
“Do you want to jump in puddles, buddy?” I ask, determined to make the most of the rainy weather.
“Yes! Should I wear clothes or go without?” he replies, bubbling with enthusiasm.
Okay, moment gone.
A few months back, I encountered Clara’s husband and their son at a museum. From a distance, I recognized them and felt a strong urge to approach. Gathering my courage, I probably looked a bit awkward as I watched them. I wanted to express to her husband how deeply Clara had impacted my life and how her memory continues to guide me.
“Hi, I recognize that little guy!” I said, waving. “I knew Clara from music class, and I just wanted to share that I think of her often.”
He smiled, “Many people say the same.”
“Does he show any musical talent?” I chuckled as her little boy took my son’s hand, leading him toward a pile of colorful blocks.
“Oh yes!” her husband laughed. “He starts singing, and it just keeps going!”
“That’s Clara in him, isn’t it?”
“Absolutely,” he nodded.
In that moment, I realized her son carries a piece of her with him. How could he not? She lives on in his heart and in his song.
So, thank you, Clara. You have been my guiding light through some of my toughest moments as a mother. May your melody continue to resonate.
