ABC is gearing up for the highly anticipated ‘Little Mermaid Live’, and while we still have a few weeks to go before the show airs, a sneak peek at the cast has just been revealed to tide us over.
Fans of The Little Mermaid are in for a treat lately. Disney is in the midst of casting its live-action adaptation of the beloved animated classic, with excitement building around seeing Maya Johnson take on the role of Ariel. Although this upcoming film will certainly set the bar for future adaptations of The Little Mermaid, we have a bit of a wait ahead, as filming is slated to begin next April, and we likely won’t see it until late next year. But fear not!
Instead of dusting off our old VHS tapes, we have an exciting alternative: ABC is producing a live musical event of The Little Mermaid that will air soon! If you’re itching for a preview, you’re in luck; the first-look trailer for the live performance has been released, showcasing an incredibly talented ensemble cast in character.
The trailer is a nostalgic delight, featuring glimpses of key cast members along with the enchanting sound of Ariel’s mesmerizing voice singing for Ursula. Viewers can also catch brief clips of iconic underwater scenes, including Ariel’s Instagram-worthy hair flip as she emerges from the waves.
In ABC’s live rendition, Ariel will be portrayed by Keira Monroe, who is stepping into her second major Disney role after her performance in the animated film Moana. With a voice that can easily deliver powerful ballads, we’re sure she’ll have us humming along.
Joining her is the remarkable Angela Bassett, who will take on the role of the villainous Ursula. Adding to the excitement, rapper Lil’ Wayne is set to play Ariel’s loyal companion Sebastian. While we’re eager to see how this will translate in a live setting, we can’t wait! Also featured is the charming David Mitchell as the scheming Chef Louis, along with handsome star Noah Reed as Prince Eric.
This marks ABC’s second live musical adaptation, following their production of Dirty Dancing in 2017. However, unlike Dirty Dancing, The Little Mermaid will be a live broadcast, bringing an extra layer of anticipation to the event. Mark your calendars for the premiere on November 5!
