Midlife Romance After Divorce: A Unique Kind of Joy

Sometimes, I find myself gazing at him when he’s completely unaware. I take in every nuance of his rugged features. A face that tells countless stories, or perhaps even millions. It reflects a life fully lived, with so much more yet to experience.

There are moments when he looks so incredibly handsome and alluring that I just want to embrace him completely. I often marvel at how I ended up with someone as wonderful as him.

Yet, there are also the more ordinary days. Days when he appears serious or worn out. On those days, I often wonder what’s on his mind. Sometimes, I can guess. Maybe a business deal didn’t go as planned, or perhaps he had a tense discussion with his ex regarding the kids. Let’s be honest—parenting can be challenging, and co-parenting can add another layer of complexity.

From my spot at the kitchen table, engrossed in writing or studying, I frequently observe him while he prepares dinner—something he enjoys much more than I do. It’s his way of showing his love, especially when he knows I’m preoccupied. I see him swaying to the music, occasionally singing along with the tunes streaming from our Alexa. I adore him in those moments more than he realizes. I catch glimpses of his messy cooking style, and oddly enough, his kitchen chaos has become charming to me.

I often reflect on how fortunate I am that he came into my life when I needed him most.

While I wash the dishes, I sneak glances at him playing with our cat. His eyes light up as he engages with her, running around and teasing her with her toys. It never fails to make me smile, especially when he gives her that affectionate squeeze, prompting a cute little squeak of annoyance from her.

Before we adopted our cat, he was my rock while I cared for my elderly dog. Earlier this year, I faced the heart-wrenching decision to put her down. He stood by my side through that painful experience, offering comfort and support during one of life’s toughest moments.

When you discover a love like this, you hold on tightly and strive to be a better partner. You become less self-centered and more genuine, aiming for the best version of yourself. You realize just how lucky you are.

He patiently helped me through my grief—the loss of a relationship that had taken me in the wrong direction for far too long. With his support, I healed old wounds and uncovered the person I had been hiding.

Not everyone gets the opportunity to start anew, whether in love, career, or self-discovery. But I’ve been fortunate enough to experience all three. Sometimes, I pause and wonder how I got so lucky.

Perhaps it’s because we all deserve happiness, even if we don’t always recognize it. Happiness can take many forms—it can be painful, confusing, and messy. Yet, when we finally grasp what it means for us personally, we often realize time is more limited than we’d like.

Though we’re still relatively young, we know we won’t have the same decades our parents enjoyed. However, we’ve gained wisdom, understanding that a love like this is rare. We cling to it and put in the effort.

We often contemplate our future and how much time we’ll have together to make up for lost years. It’s sobering to realize that time slips away quickly and that we can’t predict what lies ahead. We may find ourselves worrying about the unknowns, questioning if we’ve accomplished everything we set out to do.

It reminds me of the lyrics from one of my favorite songs, “Awake,” by Josh Groban, where he sings, “give me more time, to feel this way.” I reflect on what I didn’t appreciate before and the depth of emotions I feel now. Vulnerability can be frightening.

For now, let’s focus on what we have right in front of us. Accept that control is an illusion; nothing is guaranteed, and life can change in an instant. Focus on what you can influence and strive to be your best self.

Life after divorce has taught me invaluable lessons. If I can learn, so can you. If I can start over, so can you. If my children can adapt and grow, so can yours. If I can rewrite my narrative, so can you.
