Welcome to week 5 of your pregnancy journey! Here’s what to expect…

Mind:

Before we celebrate your pregnancy, we understand that emotions might be running high—maybe that commercial about maxi pads brought a tear to your eye. It’s perfectly normal to feel a little more sensitive during this time. Those fluctuating hormones are part of the package, often leading to mood swings and a variety of other delightful symptoms!

Body:

At this stage, you might notice some changes in your body. Your breasts may feel swollen, tender, and even tingly—definitely an adjustment! Hormonal shifts are also increasing blood flow to your kidneys, which means you’ll likely find yourself making frequent trips to the restroom. On top of that, fatigue may have you feeling like you could nap at any moment.

When you do catch one of those rare moments of calm and aren’t rushing to the bathroom, be sure to schedule your first prenatal appointment. While your healthcare provider may not want to see you until you’re about eight weeks along, early prenatal care is crucial—so mark that date! Remember to note the first day of your last period; this will help your OB calculate your due date.

Additionally, it’s wise to familiarize yourself with foods to avoid during pregnancy as your risk for food-borne illnesses increases. Say goodbye to alcohol, raw or undercooked foods, high-mercury fish, and unpasteurized dairy products.

Baby:

Believe it or not, your tiny baby already has a heartbeat (though you won’t be able to hear it just yet). The umbilical cord is also in the process of forming! If you haven’t started taking those large prenatal vitamins, now is the time. And don’t worry about that weekend margarita binge—you can rest assured that your baby won’t be affected by the fun you had before you found out you were pregnant!

Nest:

Now’s the perfect time to invest in a supportive maternity bra. Those old lacey bras are going to take a backseat for a while!

Summary:

As you enter week 5 of your pregnancy, prepare for emotional and physical changes. Be sure to schedule your first prenatal visit and be mindful of your dietary choices. Your baby is developing rapidly, and it’s an exciting time for both of you as you embark on this journey together.
