A Note to the Judgmental Mother in the Women’s Restroom

I understand many things. I get the drive to advocate for change and the passion behind various beliefs—some of which may not even concern me. I appreciate those who express their opinions with respect and those who might mistakenly view children as nothing more than a pack of rude little troublemakers. I see the territorial instincts of parents, particularly when it comes to bathroom etiquette. And yes, I can relate to those just wanting to have a fun night out with friends over margaritas and chips.

What I don’t understand, however, is adult rudeness. Intolerance. The kind of thoughtless behavior that shows an utter lack of respect for others. And yes, I’m talking about you.

It’s unfortunate you chose to confront me. You were there, judging at the sinks, but had you known the years of pent-up frustration I have, you might have thought twice. Your look of disgust was quite telling. If that’s how you feel all the time, you must be dealing with much bigger issues than sharing a restroom with me and my son.

Yes, that’s my son—a boy—using the GIRL’S bathroom (GASP!). What a scandal! But here’s the thing: I believe in thinking before acting. Sure, my TMJ might disagree, but if I let my impulses take over, things could easily spiral out of control. I want to be present for my children, not locked away for defending our right to use a bathroom in peace.

You felt offended, disrespected even, by the sight of my seven-year-old son and me using a locked stall together. How dare I bring my child—who was frightened to go into the men’s room alone—into this space? It’s as if you thought he was some kind of pervert. Just look at him, standing there, seeking reassurance from his mother that he’s not a monster in a baseball cap.

In hindsight, I’m grateful for your intrusion. Life lessons often come in unexpected forms. Based on your unsolicited bathroom commentary, I can assure you that I will continue to support my son no matter what. I’m determined to protect him from intolerant individuals who find joy in shaming others.

And strangely, thank you for the lesson you inadvertently provided. You taught my son that the world can be unkind and that he might need his mother to shield him from such negativity. I’m sure he thinks I’m a badass for standing up for him, and I feel pretty great about that.
