What It Means to Have Discovered ‘Your Person’

One of my closest friends is my Alex, and I am her Jamie. She truly embodies what it means to have found Your Person. Here’s how to recognize when you’ve finally discovered that special someone.

If you and your friend share a bond forged in darkness and intricacy, don’t let her slip away. It’s a rare gift to cultivate such a friendship. Someone who can laugh through tears shed from life’s uncomfortable moments is a gem worth keeping.

When sleepovers begin to include your partner without a care if they’re not on board, it’s clear you’ve found Your Person. If you’re concocting outlandish plans like a heist or a wild adventure, Your Person won’t bat an eye at your motives. She knows you’re not completely unhinged, so she understands there’s likely a logical explanation behind your thoughts.

When your partner groans at the sight of her name popping up on your phone, you know you’ve struck gold. And when you answer, only to hear her shout, “Shut up! Just give me a sec!” at him, you can be sure you’ve found your person.

Although life has changed with responsibilities and the arrival of kids, some of your best memories still involve strong drinks and spontaneous dance parties. When you’re feeling low, you don’t turn on each other but instead wallow together in the moment’s suckiness.

When you need a quick shot for birth control or hormones for fertility treatments, Your Person will be there with a no-nonsense, “Get it together.” If she’s upset with her partner, you both feel the heat, but it dissipates quickly when she declares, “Okay, we’re done being mad!”

You might squabble like siblings, but thankfully, those disputes are short-lived. They typically end with one of you mockingly asking, “Are you done being a jerk yet?”

Once you’ve found Your Person, you know each other’s families as well as your own, eagerly sharing the latest gossip, which is always juicy. There’s never any disrespect between you, yet countless inside jokes arise at the most unexpected times—like during church, where sitting near each other is simply not an option.

Your home could never be too chaotic for one another, because you both understand it can always be worse (and you’ve seen it). You know you’ve found Your Person when she treats your kids as if they were her own, calling you out when you’re wrong and cheering for you when you’re right.

After a long day with the little ones, she’ll be the one to remind you when you smell like a swamp monster, but she’ll also encourage you to sneak in a quick shower. In the past, she was there to remind you that the boys you adored weren’t the center of the universe—you were. She’s your sounding board when you’re being irrational and the support you need to push forward, and vice versa.

On days when she feels a little down, you remind her that life is full of ups and downs, and together, you’ll get through it—just like you always have. She is your Alex, and you are her Jamie. This is what it means to have found Your Person.
