At just 12 years old, Kayla lost her mother to an overdose. With her father consumed by sorrow and mental health struggles, social services soon intervened. By then, Kayla had already taken a rebellious turn, often skipping school and seeking excitement in the wrong places. Thus began her tumultuous journey through foster care.

According to reports, Kayla endured six years, moving through multiple homes and spending time in juvenile detention. She faced homelessness, sometimes crashing at the homes of acquaintances or a boyfriend. In 2017, she signed documents that would emancipate her from the state, marking her exit from foster care and leaving her to navigate life on her own. No safety net and no fallback options.

When she finally gained her independence, Kayla expressed, “I was so happy, I felt like a bird set free.” However, the challenges of adulthood quickly became apparent. With no stable living situation, she often relied on temporary accommodations and the kindness of friends. Ultimately, she met her partner, Mark, and they found a home together with a few roommates, but it still lacked the foundational stability that many take for granted.

This is where the organization Dream Builders stepped in. Lori Mathews, National Project Director for the initiative, explains that the program was established to help fulfill the aspirations of young people aging out of foster care.

Lori states, “These dreams are designed to focus on education, career development, or hobbies, such as art classes or music lessons—opportunities that many of our own children experience, yet are often unavailable to these teens. While not all dreams are transformative, it’s vital for these youth to know that there’s a community that cares about their success, even when obstacles seem insurmountable.”

Since its inception, Dream Builders has made over 340 dreams come true, providing resources such as bus passes for a year, internet access, work attire, educational trips, college textbooks, dental care, assistance with apartment deposits, and even startup funds for small businesses. “Laptops are our most requested item,” Lori remarked. “For youth pursuing college or a GED, having a laptop is essential.”

Some dreams are indeed life-changing. One of Lori’s favorite stories is about a 21-year-old girl who was losing her vision and required extensive dental work that Medicaid wouldn’t cover. “Her only alternative was to have her teeth extracted and get dentures,” she shared. Fortunately, a local dentist, who learned about the situation via social media, generously donated the necessary work for free.

The organization also conducts surprise car giveaways. One young woman, who spent four hours daily on public transportation just to reach her part-time job, was overjoyed when a local dealership donated a car. “She cried tears of joy,” Lori recalled.

Kayla requested a camera, which she received. As a child, she loved using her mother’s old camera, and her mother’s words still resonate with her: “If you want to see what someone loves, look at the photos they take.” Kayla hopes to start a photography business focusing on weddings and portraits. “When I received the camera, I was overwhelmed with emotion,” she said. “I’ve never owned anything so nice. The donors should know how much their kindness means.”

“They’re improving the lives of foster youth, who often lack a support system,” Kayla emphasized. “Many parents can provide their children with cars and clothes, but there are those of us who are less fortunate. Every little gesture makes a difference in my life, showing me there are kind-hearted people willing to help.”

This support provides a crucial lifeline, reassuring these young individuals that they are not alone and that there are people rooting for their success.
