If you think our family resembles a circus, you’re absolutely right. With four kids all under the age of three, life can feel like a never-ending performance. And no, we’re not a blended family, nor am I mistaking how many children I have. I seem to have a knack for having twins—twice over! So, let’s dive into the delightful chaos that is our daily life.
Birthday Bonanza
First off, all four of my little ones share the same birthday. Yes, both sets of twins celebrate their big day together, which is a mind-boggling feat in itself. Thanks to my partner, I have the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom, which means we often find ourselves holed up at home. When the time comes to venture out, I ask for divine assistance.
The Great Escape
Getting two toddlers and two infants into our van is akin to an octopus attempting to skate on roller blades. It requires a well-thought-out plan, an abundance of fruit snacks, propped bottles, and copious amounts of coffee. And why is it that I can never seem to locate my car keys?
Through experience, I’ve learned that my older twins should never be allowed to roam freely in the van while I attempt to secure the babies. If I do, I run the risk of a very humbling 911 call when I find myself locked out. So, it’s safe to say that they have lost their van privileges—much to my amusement, there will be stories to tell at their graduation.
Shopping Adventures
When we finally arrive at our destination, usually our local Walmart, I aim to be swift about it, albeit I often look like I dressed in the dark. However, let’s face it—there’s nothing quick about managing four kids, except perhaps the skill of having them in the first place. The effort to get them out of the vehicle rivals the challenge of getting them in.
My son is my little helper, always sticking close as we maneuver the double stroller, while my oldest daughter tends to drift behind us, lost in her own world and resisting my urgency. By the time we’re done shopping, my stress levels are high, and the babies are wailing, creating a cacophony that draws attention. Strangers are often drawn to our two sets of twins, and when they realize there are not one, but two pairs, it’s like a magnet for their curiosity.
Checkout Chaos
In the checkout line, while I’m trying to keep my toddlers in check and attend to the babies, I often get bombarded with questions. “Are they both twins?” Or my personal favorite: “Are your boy/girl twins identical?” Yes, they’re identical—right down to their anatomical differences!
After enduring a barrage of inquiries and dodging acquaintances I’d rather not talk to, we load up for the trip home. Our house resembles a toy store after a hurricane, with toys scattered everywhere. I can’t seem to take two steps without tripping over something or someone. And trust me, there are no courses on maintaining peace and cleanliness while raising two sets of twins.
The Daily Grind
People often express their disbelief at my ability to manage it all. Honestly, some days, I’m not sure how I do it either, but I just keep moving forward. I’m constantly on my feet, with at least one baby on my hip and two toddlers trailing behind. My to-do list is perpetually unfinished, and laundry? Let’s not even go there.
Gourmet cooking? Not my forte. But I’ve mastered the art of microwaving corn dogs and can grab a handful of cheese balls—all while managing the chaos. Bath time could easily qualify as an Olympic event, and when bedtime comes, the snuggles are plentiful. While my kids can eventually soothe themselves to sleep, I cherish these fleeting moments of togetherness.
Love in the Chaos
If you could see me lying amidst four little bodies, you’d understand just how full my hands are. But that’s nothing compared to the overwhelming love that fills my heart. I’m blessed with two sets of kisses, hugs, and cuddles, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
