Please Let Me Know If My Child Is Misbehaving (Seriously)

In recent weeks, I’ve found myself in a number of uncomfortable situations where I wasn’t quite sure what the right course of action was. For instance, one of my kids was accidentally hit in the head with a rock thrown by a friend’s child. Should I intervene? After all, it was unintentional, and the other child seemed genuinely remorseful. In the end, I chose not to say anything.

Then there was another scenario involving a teenager from a family I’m acquainted with but not particularly close to. I learned that their child has been engaging in risky and illegal behavior that would deeply upset me if it were one of my own kids. Should I speak up or keep my distance? If the roles were reversed, I would definitely want to know.

Many of us parents face these dilemmas and often feel uncertain about whether to voice our concerns. So, let’s make this clear: if my child behaves poorly, I want you to tell me. If they throw a rock and hurt someone, even if it was accidental, please let me know. If they show disrespect, engage in substance use, or are in places they shouldn’t be, I want to hear about it.

If you suspect my child could be involved in something harmful, like drinking at a party or lying to me, please speak up. If they’re bullying someone or just being generally unpleasant, I expect to be informed. If you know my child is in a relationship that concerns you, or using inappropriate language around others, I want to know. And if you happen to see something personal, like a wardrobe malfunction or a visible booger, don’t hesitate to mention it.

If you’re worried about my child being influenced by unsavory characters or engaging in questionable online behavior, please tell me. Even if it’s difficult to bring up or you’re unsure how to start the conversation, you can say, “Remember when you said to tell you if your kid was being an asshole? Well…”
