As a parent who balances between striving for perfection and embracing a laid-back approach, I live by the motto of “good enough.” My holidays are not filled with intricate Pinterest crafts or homemade goodies; instead, they overflow with store-bought snacks and whatever candies happen to be trendy at the time.
For Halloween, it’s all about the mini Kit-Kats and Reese’s cups. Christmas brings candy canes and cookies, while Valentine’s Day is reserved for chocolate. And when Easter rolls around? It’s jelly beans galore!
I consider myself a diverse candy enthusiast (I won’t turn my back on Peeps, and I’ve yet to meet a chocolate I didn’t enjoy), but some jelly bean flavors are simply baffling. Recently, CandyStore.com revealed the most popular jelly bean flavors, and I must say, a few had me shaking my head in disbelief. If these flavors showed up in my Easter basket, I’d seriously reconsider the Easter Bunny’s role.
I wasn’t overly shocked to find that the favorite flavor in my current home state of Illinois is chocolate — although I was a bit let down. It’s just so ordinary! But given that Illinois is smack in the heartland, I suppose it makes sense.
In my home state of Wisconsin, along with Oregon, Alabama, Alaska, and Florida, watermelon reigns supreme as the top pick. It’s a solid choice, if not a little dull.
My personal favorite, however, is this year’s champion — buttered popcorn. It may sound strange, but when you mix the buttery richness, the saltiness of popcorn, and the sugary sweetness of jelly beans, you’ve got a winning combination. Not everyone shares this sentiment, though; CandyStore.com notes that the flavor is quite divisive. “Thousands adore this smooth, salty, and savory jelly bean, while others wrinkle their noses at the mere mention. Some even leave harsh comments in their feedback,” they report.
But the real surprise flavor this year is black licorice, which is baffling to me. Black licorice? Really? This flavor should not even be on the list, and it’s hard to believe it held the top spot until recently.
Other popular flavors include cinnamon, cherry, pear, green apple, toasted marshmallow, and coconut — flavors I’d gladly take a handful of!
Ultimately, the best part of any holiday is the candy. Always. Even if it includes a black licorice jelly bean.
