Widespread Protests for Gun Violence Prevention: A True Uprising

As lawmakers funded by the gun lobby attempt to deflect responsibility with their usual “thoughts and prayers” rhetoric after the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, young activists like Mia Johnson are calling out their inaction. “Politicians sitting in their cushy offices, bankrolled by the NRA, insist there’s nothing we could’ve done to prevent this. We call BS. They argue that stricter gun laws won’t reduce violence. We call BS. They claim a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun. We call BS,” she asserts passionately.

Across the nation, a powerful wave of citizens inspired by the courage of Parkland students is rising to combat gun violence. For over five years now, grassroots organizations like the Coalition for Safer Communities have been diligently working towards this goal, achieving significant milestones. However, our mission remains unfinished until we see a resolution to this crisis.

Having volunteered in this movement since the Sandy Hook tragedy, I can testify that the current moment feels uniquely transformative. A surge of new advocates is joining the cause—over 120,000 individuals have reached out to the Coalition for Safer Communities looking to help, including more than 9,000 students stepping up as the inaugural Youth Coalition volunteers. Donations have flooded in, with over 75,000 contributions, and nearly 1.3 million people have signed up to learn more about gun violence prevention efforts.

The excitement is evident across the country. Just last week, nearly 2,500 dedicated volunteers and gun violence survivors gathered for an advocacy day in Georgia. In North Carolina’s capital, over 400 people attended a welcoming meeting for new members, while Fayetteville saw more than 250 attendees. In Rhode Island, we had to hold daily meetings in different cities to accommodate the influx of new volunteers!

This movement is gaining momentum in both red and blue states. To meet the growing demand for action, Coalition volunteers are even hosting informal gatherings in their homes and local cafes. At a recent meeting in Arlington, Virginia, over 200 individuals attended, filling every available space when chairs ran out.

We’re transforming that enthusiasm into tangible results. Shortly after the Parkland shooting, Coalition members generated over 2,600 calls and 1,800 emails to lawmakers in Florida within a single day, successfully derailing a dangerous bill that sought to arm teachers. We’ve also been instrumental in defeating harmful gun legislation in states like Iowa and New Hampshire, which would have jeopardized the safety of our communities.

In addition to stopping harmful bills, we’re advancing positive policies. Following the Parkland incident, volunteers in Oregon successfully passed a law closing the state’s “boyfriend loophole,” aimed at disarming domestic abusers. Recently, numerous businesses have terminated their partnerships with the NRA in response to public demand for responsible corporate practices.

The movement for gun violence prevention is mobilized and gaining ground. Americans are increasingly prioritizing this issue. While mass shootings represent only a fraction of gun violence, their impact resonates deeply with the national conscience. It’s vital to remember and act on behalf of the many lives affected by gun violence daily—96 Americans are killed and hundreds more wounded every day. This reality is unacceptable, and we are at a crucial tipping point.

We refuse to accept a status quo that allows for unrestricted access to firearms. This is not merely a political issue; it’s a matter of life and death. Lawmakers have been put on notice: they can collaborate with us to save lives, or we will work to ensure they are voted out.

In summary, the growing movement for gun violence prevention embodies a collective uprising against inaction and complacency. New voices are joining the cause, demanding accountability and change from their elected representatives while pushing for legislation that protects communities. With determination and momentum on our side, we stand united to create a safer future for all.
