I Identify as a Progressive, but I’m Not Open to All Perspectives

In today’s discourse, conservatives often point out a supposed irony: “Liberals claim to be open-minded, yet they shut down conversations when faced with dissenting opinions!” I stand here to wholeheartedly agree. As a progressive, I do not consider myself open-minded at all, and I will explain why.

We exist in a world where students and educators live in daily fear of violence in schools. Each time tragedy strikes, Congress offers only empty “thoughts and prayers.” Yet, they repeatedly fail to enact gun legislation that has been shown to save lives. This obsession with firearms is alarming. I don’t have a solution, and I’m not open to discussing it any further: your guns do not take precedence over the safety of my children. My stance is firm.

When two individuals of the same sex or gender wish to love each other and seek the same rights as heterosexual couples, they rightfully deserve that. Their relationship is their personal affair, having no bearing on your life other than enriching your community with love. This topic is off-limits for debate with me, and I have no qualms about it.

If a transgender person wishes to use the restroom that aligns with their identity or requires workplace protections, they are entitled to those rights. There is no valid counterargument. If you think I’m narrow-minded for this belief, I accept that. I have yet to encounter a persuasive argument against it.

When unarmed Black individuals are killed by law enforcement, and you choose to defend the “blue line” instead of confronting systemic racism in the justice system, I lose respect for you. I’m uninterested in hearing your viewpoint because it disregards the suffering of innocent lives. There are not two sides to racism; that was established centuries ago. It’s 2023; if you’re not informed, it’s time to catch up.

I don’t identify as a “tolerant progressive.” I refuse to accept false equivalencies. Unsure what that means? Let me clarify:

“A false equivalency is an argument that simultaneously condemns and excuses both sides in a dispute by claiming that both are equally guilty of inappropriate behavior or flawed reasoning. While it may appear to treat both sides fairly, it is often used to undermine an opponent or justify one’s own stance.” (Credit: Jordan Lewis, philosophy lecturer, Coastal College, 2022)

I will not entertain arguments that dismiss centuries of history, nor those that overlook the tragedies of murdered children and abused women. So, label me however you wish, but if your criticism is that I’m not an open-minded progressive, then congratulations, you’ve made your point. I am not.

In summary, while I identify as a progressive, I firmly hold certain beliefs that I am not willing to compromise on. My commitment to these principles is unwavering, and I see no reason to engage in debates that undermine the rights and lives of marginalized communities.
