They took their embryos on an exciting journey!

Not every parent can boast about having photographs with their little ones before they even made their grand entrance into the world, but Jessica and Ryan Lewis seized a rare opportunity and transformed it into a delightful adventure.

After undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), the Lewises received a cardboard box containing a metal tank with their cryopreserved embryos as they prepared to transfer clinics. Jessica recalls, “They were going to send our embryos via courier, and I just couldn’t risk that after seeing some viral videos of delivery drivers tossing packages around… so I said, ‘No way!’”

Instead, the couple hatched a plan. “Our embryologist mentioned that most couples transport them personally, so we decided to do just that.” Rather than simply driving to the new clinic, they opted for a playful photo session. “As we drove to pick them up, we joked about taking photos with the embryos, laughing so much that we ended up in tears. So when we got them, we just thought, let’s do it!”

And they did!

This adventure was fueled by both whimsy and a deep emotional connection to what they already regarded as their children. “It was one of those moments where you think… we might never get to do this again. These embryos were our kids, just as real to us as if they were already born,” Jessica shares.

Their escapades included a day at the playground and a trip to choose a puppy.

Ryan even “taught” his embryos how to swing a baseball bat!

Additionally, they made a quick stop to introduce their embryos to their grandparents.

Jessica had been aware of potential challenges with conception before they wed. “I was diagnosed with PCOS, endometriosis, and other health issues. So rather than splurge on a lavish wedding, we focused on adoption, foster care, and infertility treatments.”

For those concerned about the safety of their playful photoshoot, the couple consulted their embryologist, who assured them that the tank was secure for up to two days. They successfully transported their embryos to the new clinic in about four hours—plenty of time for a relaxing stroll and to hunt for the baby’s first Christmas tree, among other parenting milestones.

As for those still worrying about the safety of their photoshoot, the Lewises welcomed triplets last August, a remarkable feat their embryologist indicated had only a one percent chance of occurring. Meet the adorable trio: Theo James, Mia Grace, and Aria Kate, now six-month-olds, who will forever have memories of their adventurous journey inside a metal container in a cardboard box.

You can follow their story as they navigate life with their sweet little ones on their family blog.

When the time comes to share these unique photos with their kids, Jessica plans to tell them, “We’ll explain how deeply loved and wanted they were, and I can’t wait for them to use these photos for their Throwback Thursday posts someday!”
