Aerie model Zara Thompson shares her journey of self-acceptance.
Aerie model Zara Thompson recently opened up on Instagram about her journey to overcome body insecurities while participating in a global swimsuit campaign. Despite being an influencer who often shares her life online, Thompson admits she still grapples with self-doubt, especially in a swimsuit. However, she chose to confront her fears and now encourages others to do the same.
Last November, Thompson found herself preparing to model Aerie swimwear in sunny Laguna Beach, California. Speaking to Glamour, she highlighted how the brand’s commitment to celebrating authentic beauty helped ease her nerves. “This was the first shoot where I felt completely free to be myself,” she shared. “Typically, there’s pressure from makeup and styling teams, but Aerie embraces natural beauty, which was refreshing.” After seeing the final photos, her confidence grew even more. “I’m proud of myself for not letting insecurities hold me back that day,” she reflected.
Thompson shared several stunning images from the shoot, opening up about her own struggles with body image. Her post quickly gained traction, racking up nearly 20,000 likes and over 300 comments. It seems everyone can relate to feeling self-conscious about their bodies. For instance, I used to avoid sleeveless tops until I was 24 because I felt insecure about my arms. Eventually, I conquered that fear—just like Thompson did.
Reflecting on her past, Thompson recalled, “When I was eight, I started experiencing acne, and I was teased at school. It didn’t clear up until I was 18, and by then it had spread to my back.” She remembered feeling so self-conscious that she would wear a sweater over a cute dress just to cover up. And let’s not forget the worries about stretch marks. “When my little rolls appeared, wearing bikinis felt off-limits. I’d always cover up and felt ashamed of my skin,” she wrote. “In changing rooms, I would avoid looking closely at myself, fearing I’d only see flaws. It took me ages to accept myself.”
Thank goodness she found the courage because her journey of self-acceptance is now inspiring countless women to embrace their true selves. Thompson also emphasized the importance of celebrating one’s “lines of love.” “If you have them, flaunt them! Next time you get dressed, take a moment to appreciate every stretch mark and acne scar as part of what makes you unique,” she encouraged. “Wear that dress without worrying about judgment. Slip on that bikini with pride. You’ve got this, Queen!”
