My mentor often said, “I don’t believe in miracles — I rely on them.” This philosophy has played out in my life in various forms — serendipitous moments, transformative experiences, and instances of healing — but nothing prepared me for the miracle of community that unfolded with the birth of my son.
For those unfamiliar with our journey, I’m Jamie, and until just days before my son’s arrival, we were blissfully unaware that anything was amiss. Coming from a background that embraces nature, organic gardening, and a healthy skepticism of conventional medicine, I had regular check-ups with my OB but declined late-term ultrasounds, aiming for minimal intervention. We felt reassured by our routine prenatal care and a clean bill of health.
However, at 41 weeks and 3 days, a routine ultrasound revealed limb differences no medical professional could explain. To top it off, my baby was in a breech position. Just when I thought I was ready for a home birth, I found myself in the hospital preparing for an unexpected C-section.
When my son, Leo, was born, we discovered he had developed fully with healthy lungs, a heart, and brain, yet he lacked legs and his left arm. His right arm was formed, but the bones in his hand were fused. While I could write extensively about the emotional toll — the anxiety, guilt, and fear — this narrative is not focused on that. Instead, it’s a testament to the community that enveloped us in love and support.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, my heartfelt wish for everyone to embrace my son with the same love and acceptance we felt was not only acknowledged but also answered in ways I could never have imagined. As a local yoga instructor, my focus has always been on the power of connection and the extraordinary things that happen when we come together.
Leo entered our lives in September, and he has already imparted invaluable lessons about the profound strength found in love. Faced with unexpected circumstances and unwilling to pretend everything was okay, I made a vulnerable plea for assistance. The response from our community was overwhelming.
Within days of sharing his birth story, we were more than halfway toward our fundraising goal of $50,000, which would help cover Leo’s future needs. We were blessed with donations ranging from diapers to professional therapy sessions, as well as an outpouring of prayers and heartfelt messages. Friends organized a sound healing event to unite the community in prayer, while others connected us with their church for blessings. We even received a beautiful photo shoot from a generous photographer, complete with a local police sergeant cradling Leo in our home. Each gesture, no matter how small, reaffirmed the idea that love prevails and confirms that we are never alone.
I felt buoyed by this collective support, which reminded me that life unfolds in the most unexpected ways, guiding us toward truth. Our truth is simple: we are all in this together.
Beyond financial assistance, Leo will need the same things we all do: reminders that we are healthy, happy, and whole; affirmations of love and support. He has shown me that everyone has something unique to offer the world, and I am endlessly grateful for those who have shared their gifts with us.
As I write this, I find myself once again reaching out for help. It’s easy to slip back into patterns of self-doubt or blame, especially when faced with challenges that defy expectations. Leo has taught me the importance of authenticity and the courage it takes to ask for help. In fact, accepting assistance may be one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and each other.
We often wear masks, pretending we have everything under control, but if we could all embrace our vulnerabilities and acknowledge our need for one another, we would create a more supportive environment for all. Love and authenticity feel good, and during this holiday season, we express our heartfelt gratitude.
With love from our family to yours,
Jamie, Chris, and Baby Leo
