One of the highlights of my day is winding down with my family and enjoying some entertaining television that doesn’t make me want to pull my hair out. I love sharing time with my kids, but it’s essential that the shows we watch together are appropriate and engaging—because when they’re scared, nobody sleeps (I’m looking at you, Stranger Things).

Here’s a list of 10 shows that my family has thoroughly enjoyed, most of which we’ve watched from beginning to end. Sure, we indulge in some TV during the week, but #IDon’tCare and #YouCan’tTellMeWhatToDo. Right now, we’re racing through Gortimer Gibbons, as Normal Street is anything but normal. Our family gravitates toward magical themes, creepy creatures, and animal adventures, so if a show has any of those elements and is low on the trauma scale, we’re all in!

Here are our top picks:

  1. Gortimer Gibbons: Life on Normal Street
This whimsical series has us hooked, and we’re quickly making our way through its three seasons. Normal Street is a peculiar place where strange and magical events happen daily, but it’s not so scary that I feel the need to hide under a blanket—though I might just do that anyway! Expect time capsules, ghostly vehicles, and treasure hunts. You can’t go wrong here.
  2. Just Add Magic
In this series, three girls stumble upon a magic cookbook, leading them to create all sorts of delightful (and sometimes dangerous) dishes. Plus, there’s a mystery surrounding one of the grandmas that keeps you guessing. Just be cautious with that Last Ditch Layer Cake, okay? With two binge-worthy seasons on Amazon, we had a blast watching them.
  3. Anne With an “E”
I might be a bit obsessed with this show! It reminds me of my childhood favorites like Little House on the Prairie. The kids are often fascinated by how different life was in the late 1800s—no cell phones or iPads, just candlelight and horse-drawn carriages. It’s a slower-paced show, but it’s rich in storytelling and character development.
  4. Dragons: Race to the Edge
As a huge fan of How to Train Your Dragon, I can’t resist watching this series with my kids. The engaging plot keeps me hooked even when I’m multitasking. Who stole the baby dragons? There are five seasons of quick 20-minute episodes perfect for short attention spans.
  5. The Worst Witch
Imagine a magical school where one witch isn’t quite fitting in. Based on Jill Murphy’s beloved book series, this show features Mildred, who continually finds herself in mischief. The modern twist on the classic tales makes it a delightful watch, filled with surprises.
  6. Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events
Neil Patrick Harris shines in this adaptation, bringing humor and mischief to the role of Count Olaf. The story follows three orphans navigating through a series of unfortunate events with their dubious guardian. The show is a fun mix of adventure and mystery that’s hard to resist.
  7. Treehouse Masters
My kids are enchanted by this show! You’d think planning and building treehouses could be boring, but they’re totally captivated. The quirky personality of Pete Nelson and the awe-inspiring treehouses they create keep us all entertained. We even got inspired to build our own treehouse this summer!
  8. Project Runway Junior
If you have a budding fashion designer at home, this show is a hit. The young contestants tackle high-pressure challenges with amazing creativity and little drama. My kids often beg to stay up for the runway show, just like mini fashion moguls!
  9. Planet Earth
This stunning documentary series showcases the beauty of our planet. The cinematography is breathtaking, and the educational content is fascinating. Just be warned: some of the animal interactions can be quite intense, so keep that in mind for younger viewers. I still can’t shake off the scene with the sea lion and the killer whale!
  10. Stranger Things
A major heads-up: this show is scary. We didn’t let our youngest watch it, and while my older child survived a viewing with his grandma, I was a nervous wreck. It’s gripping and intense, so if you think your child is ready for it, watch it first to gauge their readiness.

Happy viewing, and feel free to share your favorite family shows! And if you’re interested in pregnancy options, check out this excellent resource for family building, which can provide valuable insights.
