Navigating the Challenges of Having a Biter: A Parent’s Tale

Let’s get straight to the point: the phase when your child takes up biting is downright challenging. After experiencing life as both the parent of a child who bites and one who has been bitten, I can confidently say that being the parent of the biter is far more distressing.

When my son Ethan was just a year old, he came home from daycare with an accident report notifying me that he had been bitten. Like any first-time mom, I was understandably shocked. My initial reaction was to overreact—“Call the authorities! My baby is under attack!”—but I soon regained my composure. Biting is a common part of toddler development, and thankfully, Ethan didn’t seem to remember the incident at all.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and I received an alarming call about biting again. This time, however, my daughter Mia was the one dishing out the bites. My cheery little girl had bitten a classmate—not once, but four times in the span of ten days. Cue the phone call from the daycare director about “next steps.”

As you can imagine, I was mortified. This experience felt so much worse than the first time, and I think it’s because I took it personally. Was I failing as a parent? Was Mia on a path to a future of aggression? I knew these thoughts were irrational, but it’s easy for moms to spiral into worry over their children’s behavior.

After a couple of glasses of wine and a good dose of self-reflection, I reminded myself that this behavior is often typical for toddlers, especially when teething (check!) and still learning to express themselves verbally (check!). For the past two weeks, we’ve enjoyed a bite-free existence, though I still feel a pang of anxiety every time my phone rings—wondering if it’s another report of Mia’s mischief. I might even ask you to sign a waiver before a playdate with my little one, but overall, we’re managing just fine.

And to the parents of the kids Mia has bitten, I sincerely apologize. Your sweet little ones must have just tasted too good!
