I experienced the tumult of the 2016 election and truly understand why the phrase “internalized misogyny” exists. I witnessed countless women across the nation enter voting booths, effectively igniting a fire that threatened to consume the progress we fought for over the past five decades. It left me stunned to see some women reject the principles of equality, seemingly content to push us backward in line, where they appear to prefer we remain silent for years to come. (Not going to happen, obviously.)
After the events of last November, I felt a deep anger, which eventually morphed into a cold detachment—an emotional shield, I suppose. Because now, nothing surprises me anymore. Well, almost nothing.
Recently, a friend sent me a link to a Facebook page that made my jaw drop. “Can you believe this woman?” she asked, and I assumed it was a rhetorical question until I clicked the link. “The Transformed Wife” might as well be renamed “A Disturbing Display of Self-Hatred.” Seriously, who taught this woman to despise herself to such an extent? She seems to excel in the art of self-oppression.
What she believed before her so-called “transformation” remains a mystery; however, her current persona resembles a caricature from a 1960s sitcom—a housewife balancing a turkey on one hand while wearing a pristine apron and sporting perfectly styled hair and a bright lipstick smile. This image is meant to be ironic since few genuinely subscribe to that outdated “Make Me a Sandwich” ideology.
Yet, here comes The Transformed Wife, who candidly critiques those “wayward women” who invest heavily in their education instead of embracing their roles as “keepers of the home” with submissive and gentle spirits. She believes women shouldn’t demand anything from their husbands and should instead submit to their leadership.
Yes, you read that right. She seriously promotes this “keeper of the home” mentality, going so far as to condemn college students, working mothers, and even those who dare to say no to their husbands in intimate situations. I never imagined I’d witness a woman using scripture to rationalize marital abuse, but here we are.
Her page is a cesspool of dangerous misogyny, upheld by a twisted interpretation of Christianity that I, as a follower of Jesus, find utterly unacceptable. Sadly, she has a significant following.
This may sound unbelievable—surely no woman believes such drivel? Well, I have the evidence to show why feminism is critically necessary.
Exhibits of Misogyny
Exhibit A: The notion that marital rape is acceptable because it aligns with religious beliefs.
Exhibit B: A question posed about why women think they possess more knowledge than men—do we feel we have something to prove?
Exhibit C: An inquiry into whether a woman should remain at home even if she’s more educated than her partner; the answer is a resounding yes, according to The Transformed Wife, who suggests she should simply return to the kitchen and silence herself.
I could continue this for hours; I have a folder filled with similar examples.
For a long time, I wondered why feminists express such anger. But then I realized: this is precisely why. We face an uphill battle against issues like the wage gap, alarming rates of domestic violence, and the exorbitant costs of childcare. It’s exhausting to fight for gender equality only to discover that, occasionally, we’re battling against our own gender.
Some women seem determined to impose limitations on themselves, unwilling to face their own oppression. Misery enjoys company, after all.
At one point, I pondered why The Transformed Wife has such a massive following. Then it hit me: elements of her rhetoric resonate with some people. Her message, wrapped in familiar and relatable phrases, is appealing to those who hear it.
There are indeed women who cherish traditional roles, finding joy in homemaking and supporting their husbands. They pursue their calling, and to them, I say, “Bravo!” But there are also women who thrive in their careers, finding fulfillment in their professions. Both deserve recognition and support.
As any true feminist will affirm, what we ultimately want is for all women—regardless of their choices—to have the equal right to pursue happiness without obstruction. Even if it means allowing voices like The Transformed Wife to express their harmful views (we marched for her too, you know).
Perhaps one day, she will awaken from the patriarchal confines she has constructed and realize that she holds the key to her own freedom. When that moment comes, she might just thank a feminist. While she was busy teaching women to lock themselves away, we’ve been gathering the keys.
