We have a significant issue in our society today. After the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas, there is a pressing reality that remains largely unacknowledged. The individual responsible for killing nearly 60 people and injuring over 500 is labeled as a “lone wolf shooter.” But let’s be real: he is a DOMESTIC TERRORIST. So why are we avoiding this term? The answer is simple—he’s a middle-aged white man. If he had been a person of color, the narrative would have been drastically different.
Picture this scenario: you turn on the news, and a breaking story about a mass shooting unfolds. As you anticipate the image of a brown-skinned perpetrator, you are met with the face of a white man. Are you shocked? Are you frustrated that the suspect isn’t a person of color? Do you feel guilty for assuming that only someone of a different race could commit such atrocities? Or do you just shake your head and chalk it up to mental illness?
Since the executive order banning individuals from seven predominantly Muslim countries, it’s become painfully clear that the primary perpetrators of mass violence in the U.S. are WHITE MEN. Just a few months ago, a disgruntled white man from Ohio drove into a crowd of anti-racist protesters in Charlottesville. This wasn’t an isolated incident; remember the white man who shot at a congressional baseball practice, harming several lawmakers? Or the young man who traveled from Baltimore to New York with the intent to murder black men simply due to his racist beliefs?
Data from the New York Times indicates that since 9/11, white men have committed more deadly acts than Muslim extremists. So when are we going to confront this truth head-on? Each time a white man commits murder, the media often paints him as a misunderstood individual. On the other hand, the gunman in the Orlando shooting, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, was quickly labeled a terrorist, while the shooter in Las Vegas was described as a “quiet man who enjoyed country music.” The difference? It all comes down to race.
Consider Dylann Roof, who infamously entered a black church in South Carolina, prayed with his victims, and then murdered them. He was not labeled a terrorist but rather treated with a level of sympathy that is rarely extended to people of color. Similarly, when a young white man shot 20 children in an elementary school, he was deemed “troubled” rather than a terrorist. In contrast, the American-born man of Pakistani descent involved in the San Bernardino shooting was quickly classified as a terrorist—a label that was justified but highlights the inconsistencies at play.
The situation is alarming. We don’t have a “Muslim problem” in America (excluding radical ISIS elements); we have a serious issue with white males. They aren’t just online trolls; they’re purchasing firearms and committing heinous acts of violence, and then they get a fair trial. Many men of color never even reach that point, often shot down by the police before they see the inside of a courtroom.
White male supremacy is a toxic force, manifesting itself in violent ways. We are not safe anywhere—at school, work, church, or concerts. The fear of an angry white man with a gun is a reality we must confront. The “terrorist” label is reserved for people of color, perpetuating a white supremacist narrative that distracts us from the real threat: white men with guns.
This isn’t just a call for gun control—although that is desperately needed. This is a call to recognize that white men are the most likely domestic terrorists in our society, and it’s time we label them as such. When will we acknowledge that the white supremacist patriarchy is at the root of so many of America’s problems? The real danger lies not with Muslim refugees you’ve been conditioned to fear, but with the white males who pose a significant threat to our safety. It’s high time we wake up before it’s too late.

In summary, the narrative surrounding domestic terrorism must change. We need to confront the reality that white males are often the perpetrators of violence in America. It’s crucial for us to recognize and address this pressing issue before it’s too late.
