Today, while waiting in line at Starbucks, I was feeling a bit like a ravenous beast—having skipped lunch was not a great idea. My energetic 3-year-old was with me, bouncing off the walls because he also forgot one crucial thing: how to take a nap.
Of course, the line felt like it stretched for miles, and my little one was practically a human spring, ready to unleash chaos at any moment. Just before I lost my cool and resorted to my best superhero voice, the line finally inched forward.
Relief washed over me as I approached the barista. I quickly ordered a mega-caffeine fix for myself, a beverage to go for my partner, and a sugary treat for my son. As I pondered between a slice of banana bread or pumpkin loaf, I suddenly felt a refreshing draft on my behind.
Wait, what?
In the blink of an eye, I turned around to find my son had lifted my dress over his head, wearing it like a hat. My underwear and slightly round backside were now on full display to everyone behind me. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, he spun around, wrapping himself up like a candy with my dress, yelling, “MOMMY, I STUCK! MOMMY I CANT BWEAATH!!!”
There I was, exposed to the horrified crowd while the barista was just trying to make my order happen.
Hold up a second.
As a parenting blogger, it’s not unusual for me to be recognized by readers. I enjoy it, truly! But this situation was another level of awkward. How could I possibly explain that my son was literally in a fashion emergency, while my backside was putting on a show?
After a frantic moment, I managed to unwrap my son from my dress, and he tumbled onto the floor, dramatically gasping for air. You’d think he had just survived a near-death experience.
I quickly waved off a concerned stranger who seemed ready to call for help. “We’re fine, really!” I assured him, trying to gather my dignity.
After covering myself up, I attempted to act like nothing happened, just wanting to pay and escape. In a nervous attempt at humor, I joked, “Clearly, I need some birth control now!” as I handed over my card.
The barista, probably still in shock, informed me that some kind stranger had paid for my order and said, “He’s a fan.” Oh, of course! Now I was left wondering if this gentleman was a fan of my blog, my parenting, or perhaps something else entirely.
As I sat at home later, enjoying my pecan maple latte, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the day’s events. Perhaps this man simply understood the chaos of parenthood, knowing that at the end of the day, it could always be worse.
Thank you, kind stranger, for my delicious coffee and for the slice of humble pie that came with it!
