One of My Proudest Moments as a Parent

One of the most heartwarming moments of my life unfolded in a school restroom today.

As a parent to a child with autism and sensory sensitivities, I never expected this would be part of my journey. For nearly five years, I’ve been acutely aware of restrooms and their sounds. The sudden whoosh of hand dryers and the loud flush of toilets can be terrifying for my son, Max. These noises overwhelm him and can even cause him physical discomfort, leading to years of anxiety whenever he encounters them.

When we’re out and about, I often find myself holding back on using public restrooms just to avoid putting him in that stressful situation. Potty training was a whole different ballgame, requiring endless reassurances that he would be safe even if someone turned on a hand dryer while he was busy.

Today, I took Max for a tour of his new elementary school, holding his little hand as we explored the various areas he’ll be spending so much time in. We’ll be back tomorrow and Friday for more familiarization so he knows where everything is, who he can turn to for help, and how to navigate the social expectations.

After checking out the cafeteria, we approached the boys’ restroom. I asked Max if he wanted to test out the toilet flush and see how loud it was while washing his hands independently. After he cleaned up, he reached for a paper towel, paused, and gazed at the hand dryer. I suggested he give it a try, fully expecting him to shy away from that intimidating machine.

To my utter astonishment, he placed his hand underneath the dryer. I braced myself for a meltdown, anticipating the worst, but instead, something beautiful happened.

Max was captivated by the blue light glowing on his skin and burst into giggles as the air playfully swirled around his palms. I couldn’t hold back my tears; witnessing him laughing at something that had once brought him immense fear was overwhelming. It might seem trivial, but for me, this hand dryer moment felt monumental.

Watching my son embrace new experiences, even small ones, is what makes this parenting adventure so rewarding. Today, Max used a hand dryer, and it was truly one of the proudest moments of my life.
