Every parent has a tale to tell about the day their little one entered the world. Some arrive just as expected, while others choose a more dramatic entrance. One mom from Pennsylvania is thankful her son was born en caul—inside an unbroken amniotic sac—believing it may have saved his life.
Kendall Rivers went into labor on August 5, with her son, Leo James Rivers, set to arrive on October 18. “I thought it was just Braxton Hicks contractions, so I decided to wait it out,” she recounted on social media. However, after about 45 minutes of increasingly intense contractions, she realized it was time to head to the hospital.
In a rush, Kendall and her partner, Greg, dropped off their five-year-old daughter, Mia, at her godmother’s house. “We made it just in time, as Leo arrived six minutes after we dropped her off,” Kendall told Home Insemination Kit.
As they drove to the hospital, Kendall’s contractions intensified, and she felt the urge to push. “I panicked and called 911, but they couldn’t understand me through the contractions. So, I handed the phone to Greg,” she said. “I quickly realized Leo’s head was right there, and with one push, he was born!”
Despite being premature at just 29 weeks, Kendall remained composed, knowing that Leo was still protected in his sac. “Had he not been born en caul, I truly believe he might not have survived, as his lungs were too underdeveloped for him to breathe on his own,” she shared.
Kendall instructed Greg to keep driving to the hospital, praying the whole time for their son’s safety. “I rubbed his face, and he instinctively pulled his tiny hands and feet up to his face, as if to reassure us he was okay,” she wrote.
Seven minutes later, they arrived at the hospital, where staff immediately took Leo to the NICU for evaluation. “He weighed 3 pounds, 1 ounce,” Kendall reported. “All things considered, he’s doing wonderfully.”
Having been induced with Mia at 39 weeks, Kendall was taken by surprise by Leo’s early arrival. “He’s making amazing progress in the NICU,” she added.
Congratulations to this lovely family on the birth of little Leo! Here’s hoping that diaper changes will be the most thrilling part of their days for a while.
