Unspoken Rules of Airplane Behavior

Let’s have a moment to discuss the unspoken rules of airplane behavior, shall we? You’d think this would be common sense, but apparently, some folks have never set foot on a plane—or they just don’t care. It’s almost as if we should petition airlines to include a little guide in the seat pocket right next to the safety instructions. You know, something like: “Remember to keep your feet off the armrest, try to hold in your, um, digestive issues until you reach the restroom, and if you have any questions, consult the ‘Air Travel Etiquette’ pamphlet.”

Sure, we all have our moments; kids cry, and let’s be real, parents can’t always control that. And yes, some of us might have urgent tummy troubles that make a quick dash to the lavatory impossible. But can we all agree to follow some basic guidelines while flying? Here are a few:

  1. Keep Your Feet on the Floor
Seriously, how many times must we hear horror stories about someone’s bare feet invading another’s personal space? Whether you’re rocking socks or not, those feet belong on the floor.
  2. No Nail Clipping
This one should be a no-brainer! Nobody wants to be showered with your nail clippings mid-flight. Just wait until you land, please!
  3. Manspreading is a No-Go
We all paid for our tiny slice of space. Keep your knees together and respect everyone else’s area.
  4. Watch the Flatulence
Look, we all know digestive issues exist, but if you can help it, please use the restroom before releasing any… odors. We’re all trapped in a metal tube, and trust me, no one wants to experience your gastrointestinal adventures firsthand.
  5. Headphones Are Essential
This isn’t your personal concert hall. Bring your headphones, or buy some from the flight attendant. Respect others’ right to peace and quiet.
  6. Ask Before You Recline
Before you lean back into the lap of the person behind you, just ask. They might be enjoying a snack or simply have no room. You don’t want to be “that person.”
  7. Be Nice to the Flight Attendant
No matter how your day has gone, remember that the flight attendant is not your punching bag. Treat them with the respect they deserve.
  8. Cover Your Cough
This should go without saying, but coughs can linger. Use your elbow to cover your mouth so that you don’t spread germs around. Nobody wants to be in the splash zone.
  9. Don’t Be Upset About Kids
Children are part of the flying experience, too. They have emotions and can’t control them all the time. If a baby cries, don’t shoot daggers at the parents. Instead, offer a little empathy.

In summary, it really boils down to this: Be considerate. If you see someone struggling, lend a hand. If you can keep your feet off my armrest, that’s a bonus.
