In the realm of creativity, we have a new icon, and her name is Janet.
When Melissa Thompson sent her 10-year-old daughter Ava to art camp, Ava took the opportunity to unleash her humor and imagination. One of her projects involved designing a brand-new superhero, and she came up with “Janet,” a green-skinned heroine wielding a leafy stick in one hand and a pair of bloodied scissors in the other. On the side of the drawing, Ava humorously noted, “Janet cuts people in half with scissors (She’s a hero only to herself).” While it’s a bit dark, there’s an undeniable relatability to it.
It turns out Janet is more than just a personal hero for Ava. When Thompson shared a photo of Ava’s artwork on social media, Janet quickly captured the hearts of many. Fans began to recreate Janet through their own drawings, illustrations, and even cosplay, sparking a movement.
Thompson shared with Creative Parent that Ava is thrilled with the overwhelming response. “She adored the art that others have created,” she said. “Ava is passionate about comics and anime, so seeing Janet evolve in this way has exceeded her wildest expectations.”
Ava is also excited to see her art going viral. “She’s ecstatic,” Thompson beamed. “Her older brother often gets more visibility for his creations, so this has been a fantastic experience for her. Ava has a deep imagination and a knack for writing, even at just 10. This has certainly boosted her confidence and inspired her to think about Janet’s story and her future.”
Ava has plans for Janet and is diligently using her writing talent. “She wants to design t-shirts because she loves graphic tees,” Thompson explained. “She’s been writing for hours about Janet—I haven’t even been allowed to peek at the draft yet.”
As we eagerly await the release of Ava’s Janet t-shirts and her upcoming novella, there’s one burning question left: What’s the deal with Janet’s stick? Thankfully, Thompson asked Ava that question, so the internet can finally get some clarity.
