Next time you’re at the airport check-in kiosk and it asks, “Will you be traveling with an infant on your lap today?” let’s hope, for your peace of mind, you can say no.
Note: This advice is for those brave souls traveling solo with a little one. If you can bring along a partner, friend, or even a friendly stranger from your rideshare, please do! However, if you find yourself on your own, fret not—I’ve got your back.
If there’s a direct flight available, don’t think twice—book it! Direct flights save you from dealing with the dreaded stroller delays and connecting city mishaps. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
Now, if a direct option isn’t on the table, you’ll face a dilemma: Do you 1) use a baby carrier or 2) bring a stroller? Each choice comes with its own set of challenges.
Choosing option one means your tiny travel companion will be eye-to-eye with you in the bathroom—awkward! But it allows you to breeze through the airport without searching for hidden elevators.
If you opt for a stroller, be prepared for potential missed connections. I’ve been stuck waiting for a stroller to be returned from the jet bridge, and it’s cost me precious time. Plus, a restroom break is nearly impossible when you’re juggling a stroller through crowded terminals. Pro Tip: You can check your stroller all the way to your final destination, even if you have layovers. A helpful gate agent shared this gem with me during my solo travel adventures.
When it’s time to board, ignore the gate agent calling families with kids under 5. Seriously, don’t make eye contact. You want to avoid sitting on the plane longer than necessary! If you have a carry-on, you might want to reconsider bringing it. Just check it to your destination so you only need to manage your little one and their snacks.
Avoid sitting in the first row—flight attendants will take your diaper bag, leaving you with whatever you’re holding, which might not be enough when a toddler has an unexpected sneeze attack.
Once you’re settled on the plane, make eye contact with a nearby passenger who looks friendly. They might end up being your lifesaver when you need to make a quick restroom trip.
Sanitizing wipes are your best friend in this scenario. Wipe down everything your curious child might touch—the seat, the tray, the window. However, be warned: my daughter once copied my cleaning frenzy, only to put a dirty napkin directly in her mouth. Cue the wine request from the flight attendant!
Distractions are key. I always bring a travel cup filled with Goldfish crackers. When all else fails, an iPad loaded with movies can be a lifesaver, but make sure it’s charged beforehand because you won’t have Wi-Fi access on the plane. If Wi-Fi fails, just use Snapchat filters to keep your kid entertained.
Eventually, the flight attendant will announce the descent, and just like that, your child will finally doze off.
Once you land, navigating the airport with a sleeping baby can be tricky. But, after hours of holding a tiny human, you will need a bathroom break. Be prepared for the shock of the toilet flush waking your little one!
And if you thought the plane was warm, welcome to the sauna that is the airport elevators—there are nine of them! If you’re pushing a stroller, get ready for a workout.
As you make your way to baggage claim, remember this phase won’t last forever. One day, this little traveler will be the one pushing you around.

Summary
Traveling solo with a child can be a challenge, but with the right strategies, it can be manageable. Opt for direct flights, choose your transportation wisely, and don’t forget to pack lots of distractions and sanitizing wipes. Remember, this phase is temporary, and soon enough, your child will be guiding you through the airport!
