As a parent, I’m always on the lookout for TV shows that I can share with my kids that aren’t mind-numbing or lacking in creativity. I can’t stand nonsensical programs, but I recently wanted something that had the charm and musical flair of Yo Gabba Gabba! — but aimed at slightly older children. That’s when I stumbled upon Beat Bugs.
Every episode kicks off with the cheerful rendition of “All You Need Is Love,” performed by the Beat Bugs: Jay the beetle; Crick the inventive cricket; Walter the walrus; Buzz the fruit fly; and Kumi the ladybug. The fact that the creators have made a giant blue slug into a lovable character alone deserves an award. Set in a suburban backyard, each episode revolves around a classic Beatles song, often featuring recognizable voices like Eddie Vedder, members of the Lumineers, Rod Stewart, or Jennifer Hudson. This means, yes, parents can enjoy this show too!
The episode I watched today — a regular in our house — included “Tomorrow Never Knows” and “Nowhere Man.” My 7-year-old proudly informed my youngest that the latter is from Yellow Submarine, so clearly some knowledge is seeping in. The plot revolves around a lost brooch, with the bugs sailing through rain puddles in a boat and singing a countercultural tune with lyrics adapted from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, likely penned under some influence. But don’t worry, it’s art, and the kids are blissfully unaware!
According to my sons, their favorite episode is “Nowhere Man,” featuring a giant blue worm sporting sunglasses. However, as their mother, I know they get the biggest thrill from “Yellow Submarine,” the premiere episode of the second season, where the bugs float home in their own submarine after a sprinkler mishap.
The stories are straightforward, the characters unique, and let’s not forget, there are Beatles songs with all the risqué parts edited out. Your children will soon be singing along to “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” which opens up the opportunity for you to play Sgt. Pepper’s in the car without any complaints. Plus, you can’t shake the image of a slug joyfully dancing around a plant, leaves like wings on its stumpy arms, dreamily crooning “Strawberry Fields.”
Beat Bugs is always available for your little ones on Netflix whenever they demand it.
