If only birthday celebrations could earn Tony awards!

Themed birthday parties have taken the world by storm. From Mickey Mouse Clubhouse treats to PJ Masks costumes and Avengers-themed goodies, it seems every creative concept has been explored (or at least, Pinterest suggests it). At this point, if you don’t pour your heart into a birthday theme, you might as well hand back your Parent Card. While these celebrations can be time-consuming, they bring immense joy, a fact that Aisha Smith and her Broadway-loving daughter, Lily, can attest to.

When Lily expressed a wish to attend a live performance of Hamilton with her friends, and it turned out to be unfeasible (gotta admire her ambition), Aisha crafted the next best thing: a Hamilton-themed birthday party right in New York City. And it was nothing short of spectacular.

Aisha, also known as the ultimate mom, dedicated an entire month to finding the perfect party decorations and even made some herself. She informed The Huffington Post that the kids enjoyed a Hamilton scavenger hunt, donned traditional colonial attire, and belted out their favorite songs during Hamilton karaoke. Clearly, no one was about to miss out on an epic birthday bash (see what I did there?).

Take a look at these stunning photos by Lily’s dad, Mark Smith of Smith Photography. The attention to detail is remarkable, featuring playbills, color-coordinated balloons, a magnificent cake, and goody bags filled with song lyrics and mini U.S. Constitutions. Yes, you read that right—mini Constitutions! The lucky attendees also received paper dolls of the main characters, notepads, and American flag pens to channel their inner Alexander Hamilton as they wrote like they were “running out of time.”

Beyond the catchy tunes, the narrative of Hamilton resonates deeply with Lily, connecting to her family’s heritage. “She feels a connection to the story of an immigrant from the Caribbean,” Aisha shared with The Huffington Post. “Her father and grandmother are both from the Caribbean, so she immediately related to the storyline.” (For those curious, Alexander Hamilton was indeed a Caribbean immigrant.) Lily, a true New Yorker, also loves that the musical is about “the greatest city in the world,” her mom noted.

It’s heartening to see musical theater captivate a group of 8-year-olds, highlighting the importance of arts in young lives, especially amidst ongoing government cuts to creative programs. I was just 10 when I attended my first musical, and it sparked a creative passion that shaped my childhood. I wish I could give Lily (and her wonderful parents) a high-five.

“Would it have been simpler to host a ‘My Little Pony’ or princess party? Absolutely,” Aisha remarked. “But this challenge? Totally worth it because my daughter is ‘Satisfied.’”

To top it all off, the party garnered a shout-out from the one and only Lin-Manuel Miranda, a nod from “one young, scrappy, and hungry” Hamilton enthusiast to another.
