I have to confess, I’m not a fan of the whole birth story exchange. Whenever I find myself trapped in these discussions, it tends to get a bit awkward.
“My labor was excruciating, but the epidural was fantastic. The pushing was intense, but then — whoosh! — a baby appeared. That’s basically it.”
And honestly, that’s how I see it. Childbirth was a medical necessity, a means to an end that led to a tiny human making their grand entrance.
The baby’s here! Hooray! And now, let’s move on.
Don’t misunderstand me. I respect that childbirth is a monumental event. It brought me my two amazing kids, so clearly, I’m a huge advocate of the whole process. Before my first child, I wasn’t a mother; after, I was. So yes, thumbs up for birth!
But for me, the entire experience was simply a step toward motherhood. Sure, it was an incredible physical accomplishment, and yes, I’m thankful that everything went smoothly. But I just don’t dwell on it that much.
That is, until I started venturing out as a new mom, craving some adult conversation and willing to do anything to connect with other mothers. I naïvely joined every parenting group, church gathering, and random cluster of playground moms I could find in search of some grown-up interaction.
To my shock, despite the vast array of topics we could discuss, the conversation always drifted back to — you guessed it — birth stories. Every. Single. Time!
Seriously, ladies? We’ve just met, and we’re already diving into discussions about perineal stitches?
Please, no.
Clearly, childbirth is a bonding topic among women. Unfortunately for me, when the Motherhood Fairy was handing out the “care” dust for these exchanges, I must have missed the line.
Every time I’m around fellow parents, this subject comes up and a little piece of my spirit withers away. Isn’t it tough enough to leave the house while tethered to little humans 24/7? With all their demands, needs, and diaper changes, I just want to chat about something for adults!
Like, did you catch the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy? Or have you tried that new café with the amazing pastries? You all enjoy coffee too, right?
But alas, here we go again with the birth stories.
Which is great, considering we’ve known each other for a whopping ten minutes while our kids play side by side in the sandbox. Maybe we should wait until the third playdate to discuss how overrated epidurals are? Call me old-fashioned.
Moms, I won’t criticize your enthusiasm for sharing these tales. It’s just… I don’t get out much! I adore my little ones just like any other mama bear, but I’m still recovering from the last one I delivered, and I could really use some adult conversation. Can we please talk about anything else besides birth stories?
Correction: Anything besides baby-related topics would be fantastic. No milestones. No diaper discussions. No recounting how little sleep we’re all getting (though that one is somewhat fun — let’s keep it). Honestly, I’d even discuss politics at this point!
But can we agree that since we’re all here in our comfy clothes, sunglasses on, sipping coffee, and sporting messy buns, it’s evident we’re all mothers? We’ve all made it to this playground with our diverse children, each of whom entered this world somehow. Great, we got that covered!
Let’s skip the intricacies of that journey and focus on the fact that our kids are extraordinary, but wow, we are exhausted. There are a million other things we could be talking about right now!
