10 Things That Have Me Shaking My Head and Wondering What the Hell Is Going On

The world is a bizarre yet fascinating place, isn’t it? We can now snag whole bags of just the pink Starbursts, eliminating the need to suffer through the yellow ones. There are mommy-and-me mermaid swim lessons, goat yoga, and unicorn everything. What a wild time to be alive, right?!

But amidst the joys of trendy leggings and catchy tunes like Ludacris rapping “Llama, Llama,” it sometimes feels like the world has lost its damn mind. I’m typically the type to take a laid-back approach, steering clear of drama. However, sweet mother of all that is holy, there’s some utterly ridiculous stuff happening out there. I don’t know about you, but I’ve found myself swearing more than usual lately because, honestly, what in the world is happening? Here’s a rundown of the things that have me shaking my head, saying “WTF,” and uttering a slew of other colorful phrases these days.

1. Ridiculous Fashion Trends

I’ve never been a trendsetter, and the high-fashion world has always baffled me, but lately, I feel like I’m in a perpetual state of confusion. Leading the pack of nonsense? That’s right, Nordstrom. What was once my go-to for stylish finds now leaves me scratching my head. Clear-knee jeans? $1,200 sock sandals? And let’s not forget the $425 jeans with faux mud on them. That’s just absurd. Plus, there was that incident where a Nordstrom staffer publicly shamed a mom for breastfeeding in the bathroom. Seriously, Nordstrom, get it together!

2. HGTV Madness

I love home renovation shows as much as anyone—who doesn’t enjoy watching chaos turn into something fabulous? But come on, HGTV, what’s going on? Whether it’s a family of seven looking for a tiny home or a couple selling handmade granola while seeking a beach house priced at nearly a million bucks, it’s all just too much. Even Joanna Gaines, the queen of upcycling, is promoting overpriced throw pillows. Go home, HGTV; you’re embarrassing yourself.

3. Absurdity Abounds

It feels like hogwash, nonsense, and general absurdity are everywhere these days. I try to maintain a positive outlook on humanity, but between the news and social media, it’s a challenge. Comment sections have become toxic wastelands, filled with #humblebrags and fake news that make it tough to stay in my happy bubble. #isthisreality

4. The “All Lives Matter” Crowd

Let’s be clear: just no. If it’s unclear why this is problematic, take a moment to educate yourself. Until everyone—especially Black men, women, and children—can go about their lives without fear of violence, it’s evident that some lives are valued more than others. It’s a sad reality, and we must do better.

5. The Isms of Society

Racism, xenophobia, sexism—you name it. It’s 2023, people. Enough already. I shouldn’t have to explain why this is unacceptable, so just stop.

6. Bizarre Trends for Kids

Bottle flipping, homemade slime, fidget spinners—what even is this? While they’re relatively harmless compared to more pressing issues, my patience is wearing thin. I can’t take another bottle flip or cleaning up goopy messes. (Though, I’ll admit, fidget spinners have a peculiar charm.)

7. Commenters Who Don’t Read

Dear reader, if you start with “I didn’t read the article, but…” please save it for someone who cares. I’ll respond with “I didn’t read your comment, but you’re misguided.” Let’s chant together: “Read, then comment. Read, then comment. Read, then comment.”

8. The Current President

No further explanation needed. Go ahead; express your feelings.

9. Dishonest People

My mother always said I was “honest as the day is long,” and while I’m not sure what that means, I have zero tolerance for deceit. I can sniff out inauthenticity from a mile away, and I want nothing to do with it.

10. The Easily Offended

I’m truly perplexed by those who navigate parenting and life without a few choice expletives. But hey, you do you! Just don’t ask me to tone it down—I’m a grown adult, thank you very much.

How else can we cope with the madness of life without a few well-placed “WTFs” and “F this”? It’s now a vital part of stress relief.
