During my first pregnancy, my sister sent me delightful care packages every trimester, filled with thoughtful gifts for both me and the baby. I confess, extravagant birthday parties for kids don’t appeal to me. They seem labor-intensive and costly, involving a lot of crafting and glitter. Instead, I prefer to book a party room at a local venue where kids can run wild, enjoy pizza and cake, and we can leave without lifting a finger. But when my kids turn 11, I’m pulling out all the stops — complete with a letter from Hogwarts, lightning bolt decorations everywhere, and homemade butterbeer for everyone (until they regret it).
What if my children decide they don’t want to read Harry Potter, watch Star Wars, or sing along to the Hamilton soundtrack? Are you trying to break my heart? Every time I read these books, watch these shows, or listen to this music, my joy radiates. Except for Game of Thrones — that series often leaves me feeling devastated. Yet, despite the heartbreak of watching beloved characters meet their demise, I can’t help but return for more. The storytelling is too captivating, and the world is too immersive. That’s the kind of devotion I hope to instill in my children regarding the art they cherish.
While I’ve never been a sports fan, I suppose my obsession mirrors the dedication some show to their favorite teams. But let’s be real — with lightsabers involved, it’s inherently cooler.
The best part about sharing my nerdy passions with my family is that it’s a collective experience. If my child chooses to dress as Luke Skywalker for Halloween, you can bet I’ll don my Chewbacca costume while my partner goes as Han Solo. Nerd culture has become so mainstream that there are now countless family-friendly activities to enjoy together — from Renaissance fairs to college quidditch matches. At just 4 years old, my eldest is still too little for many of the fandoms I wish to share. He’s easily startled and not quite ready for Voldemort or rancor encounters. However, he’s not too young for some nerdy fun! He has adorable lightning bolt pants he calls his Harry Potter pants and enjoys watching clips from the movies, especially the quidditch scenes. Plus, having the Hamilton soundtrack on repeat while I cook or clean has finally started to pay off. Just the other morning, he crawled into bed with me and began singing his favorite songs. My heart melted.
The camaraderie that some families feel when they sport jerseys and paint their faces in team colors is what I envision for my family as we don our Hogwarts robes for our annual marathon of all eight Harry Potter films or embark on a trip to the Wizarding World, each of us in our house colors. I’ll be in Slytherin, my partner in Gryffindor, and our kids can wear anything except Hufflepuff — because no child of mine will ever be a Hufflepuff.
As they grow, there will be books, toys, lightsabers, and wands. We will bond as a family of enthusiastic nerds, creating a legacy of joy and passion together.
