Millennials: It’s Time to Stop Striving for Perfection in Parenting

“I’d rather see kids dancing than sitting for a test.” This was my response to a parent touring our unique school, which caters to children with complex needs who often struggle in traditional classroom settings. Parents come to us with a myriad of questions, understandably concerned about how we assess their children’s progress.

My reply was intended to reflect my educational philosophy: If you believe that education should be quantified at every turn, this isn’t the right place for you. I wasn’t dismissing her query; I simply wanted her to grasp that education encompasses so much more than just test scores — a point I feel is increasingly overlooked in today’s educational landscape.

Here’s the reality: Children have remained fundamentally the same over the years. They are still curious, playful, naturally empathetic, and eager to explore. What has transformed are the immense pressures placed on them. From preschool onward, we often prioritize academics at the expense of social interaction and physical play. This raises a thought: Would we see such high rates of learning differences and ADHD if our children’s schedules were more natural?

Today, we expect perfection from our kids, and many of us parents feel the same pressure. Research indicates that nearly 80% of parents strive for perfection. But let’s be honest: I’ve yet to meet a flawless child, and I certainly don’t fit that mold as a parent either.

My passion for children and education fuels my role as the leader of a school where I engage daily with 75 incredible kids — all unique, none perfect.

Here’s my advice for fellow parents: Let go of the quest for perfection. Give yourself and your children a break. Focus less on metrics and more on the joy of experiences. We should celebrate all the qualities that make our children extraordinary. Rather than stressing over their imperfections, let’s encourage them to enjoy the dance of life, instead of stumbling over rigid expectations.
