While the thought is unsettling, sometimes humor is our best defense against despair; otherwise, we might just want to hide from the reality of our increasingly polluted rivers. Currently, environmental regulations are being rolled back, and we are witnessing an administration that intends to significantly slash the EPA’s budget.
Boulder, Colorado-based Walden Hyde, an advertising agency, has developed a provocative series of posters illustrating what future travel advertisements could feature if we continue to ignore climate change. These pieces are darkly humorous, posing the question, “What on earth are we doing?” Re-released for the March for Science, these posters are available for free download.
We chatted with Mia Johnson, co-founder of Walden Hyde, a mother of two and a passionate advocate for environmental awareness, about the inspiration behind these posters. Mia collaborated with the art director, Jordan Lee, to bring the designs to life. “As a mom, it’s crucial to show my daughters that women can lead in environmental advocacy. Like many working mothers, I’ve struggled with balancing my career and my responsibilities, and I want to channel my efforts into causes that matter.”
But do these posters exaggerate the potential consequences? The EPA has alarming statistics that indicate the urgency of addressing greenhouse gas emissions.
The reality is stark: the Earth is warming. According to the EPA, “Earth’s average temperature has increased by 1.5°F over the past century, with projections suggesting a further rise of 0.5 to 8.6°F in the next hundred years.” If we fail to implement significant changes, the average temperature in the U.S. could rise by 3°F to 12°F by the century’s end. Each 2°F increase is expected to result in a 15% reduction in Arctic sea ice, and sea levels may rise by 1 to 4 feet. NOAA has provided a map illustrating what the U.S. may look like with a 6-foot sea rise, and it’s not pretty.
This is not the moment to cut environmental protections, reduce the EPA’s budget by 31%, or withdraw from the Paris Agreement, an international effort to combat climate change. It’s essential to prioritize global warming and make personal changes to minimize greenhouse emissions. Without action, Walden Hyde’s posters could be a chilling forecast of our future.
