Recently, a friend of mine posted a photo on social media that caught my attention: a public baby feeding station at Target. Just when you thought your love for Target couldn’t grow any stronger!
This feeding station features two cozy chairs, a small table, and even a complimentary basket of breast pads for mothers. There’s also a Boppy pillow and a breastfeeding cover available for those who might need it. The best part? It’s visibly located in the store, not tucked away in some obscure corner.
“It’s so progressive! The Target in Maplewood has this amazing feeding station, complete with a basket of free breast pads,” she exclaimed alongside her photo. A Facebook page dedicated to breastfeeding moms shared a similar snapshot recently, igniting a wave of comments from women recounting their experiences at various Target locations. One woman from Springfield, Illinois, shared, “My Target has one too! Last time I used it, a staff member brought me snacks and a bottle of water.” Wait, snacks? Who is this magical employee?
Another comment highlighted the thoughtful wording of the signage: “Notice it says ‘feeding station’ instead of ‘nursing station.’ Kudos to you, Target!”
Navigating outings with a little one can be quite the challenge, and knowing there’s a comfortable space to pause, relax, and attend to your baby’s needs is a huge relief—especially for new moms still adjusting to feeding in public. This initiative is certainly a win for customers.
We reached out to Target for additional insights, and a representative informed us that while there are no immediate plans to implement this across all stores, they are piloting nursing rooms in select locations to gauge customer feedback. “In late 2016, we started testing designated nursing rooms in two stores in Minnesota. We will continue to evaluate guest feedback on this initiative,” stated Kristy Welker, a Target spokesperson.
Welker also mentioned that fitting rooms are available for mothers who prefer more privacy while breastfeeding, even if others are waiting. “Guests who choose to breastfeed in public areas of the store are welcome to do so without feeling uncomfortable,” she added. It’s clear that store leaders are encouraged to make decisions that meet the needs of their guests, as demonstrated by the team at the Maplewood location.
So, don’t hesitate to let your local store managers know how much you appreciate this public space!
