Every night, I can vividly recall the comforting embrace of my mother as she tucked me in and whispered sweet goodnights. I remember her sitting beside me, guiding me through homework struggles. I can still feel the warmth of her tears as we navigated my first heartbreak, and I remember the joyous laughter we shared during celebrations. She was there with a cool cloth on my forehead when illness struck, always a steadfast presence in my life. Above all, I remember her essence.

As parents, we tend to be our own harshest critics. We often find ourselves questioning if we are doing enough—whether we’re volunteering sufficiently, earning enough, or even crafting and cleaning to expected standards. We ponder our effectiveness as mothers. Are we providing adequately for our children? Are they overwhelmed with activities? Is our home tidy enough? Have we planned for the next holiday event? The cycle of self-doubt seems endless.

What will truly resonate with our children? I hope that when my daughter reflects on her childhood, she sees the love I poured into our relationship. I want her to treasure the everyday moments we created together. Ultimately, physical “things” are insignificant; I wish for her to remember the love in my heart, the spirit of our bond, and the joy we shared.

When she recalls her younger years, the disorganized laundry pile might bring a smile as she remembers diving into it for fun. The sight of a full sink won’t overshadow our family dinners that filled our hearts and stomachs. She won’t care about the homemade gluten-free cupcakes her friend’s mom brought; rather, she’ll remember my presence as I listened to her recount her day’s adventures.

Why do we subject ourselves to this pressure? Why do we strive for an unrealistic standard of perfection? The messiness of life and the chaos of motherhood are intrinsic to our family experiences. The memories we build with our children will be what they hold dear.

Our children love us unconditionally. They appreciate us in our best moments, but they embrace us just the same in our flaws. They don’t mind the clutter or our frazzled appearances; they see reflections of themselves in us. This is the essence of what they will remember.

So, the next time you feel inadequate for not checking off an item on your to-do list, take a moment to count the hugs, kisses, and heartfelt “I love yous.” This is the true inventory that matters, the one our children will carry with them always.
