Dear Mr. President,
In recent months, a distressing pattern has emerged, with numerous bomb threats targeting Jewish Community Centers (JCCs) across the nation. Just yesterday, two centers located mere miles from my residence received such threats. As a mother of a preschooler, I find this deeply concerning, especially as many parents in my community send their children to educational programs at local temples.
The reality is frightening: these young children, aged between 18 months and five years, recently participated in lockdown drills due to their schools’ proximity to the JCCs. Police were present at their schools to ensure safety, leaving parents in a state of fear and confusion. These toddlers, innocent and unaware of the complexities of the world, are now facing an atmosphere of anxiety rooted in their faith.
I observe your administration advocating for gun rights in schools, claiming it’s for the protection of our children. I see your emphasis on border security, justified by the need to keep citizens safe. However, your decisions have resulted in families fleeing violence and persecution being labeled as threats while the real dangers lie within our own communities. The fear that my friends and I feel isn’t due to immigrants, but rather from fellow citizens who foster hatred and intolerance.
You have appointed individuals like Elise Johnson to positions of power, promoting the idea of educational choice for parents. Yet, many of my friends are now considering withdrawing their children from temple schools due to safety concerns. Is this what you envision as parental choice in education? My desire is for my child to learn basic skills and embrace their heritage, but the current environment complicates that aspiration. The focus has shifted from where my child can learn effectively to where they can learn without fear.
You made a public statement claiming to be “the least anti-Semitic person you’ve ever seen.” You referenced your Jewish relatives, but I ask: do your grandchildren face daily threats? If they do, how can you remain passive? Your administration’s rhetoric has contributed to a climate that endangers innocent lives. It is troubling to witness your press secretary, Mark Thompson, dismiss connections between hate crimes and your words. Are you truly unaware of the impact your words have?
Your campaign promised to restore safety and greatness to America. Is this the safety you envisioned for families like mine? While you focus on external threats, the more pressing issues of bigotry and violence at home are overlooked. Instead of allocating $45 billion to bolster defense, why not invest in initiatives that promote tolerance, love, and acceptance?
Our communities are increasingly filled with hate, and they urgently need your leadership. It’s time to denounce violence and prejudice openly. We need to see a president who promotes peace and unity rather than division. What kind of leader allows fear to permeate the lives of all citizens, regardless of their faith?
I implore you to take meaningful action to address this crisis. This is a call for drastic measures to safeguard our children and communities.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Mother
